We've all said it, usually around New Year when our waistlines tend to extend outwards at an alarming rate "I must diet, I must do more exercise, I must join that Health Club down the road etc"
Invariably such dramatic actions never really come to fruition and we just carry on munching throughout the year. Perhaps one of the greatest objections about health clubs is their rather high membership fees & monthly subs that tend to disuade us from joining.
However one of the biggest health centres in the country, Living Well, do offer an extensive range of exercise & fitness courses along with a relatively modest membership fee that doesn't involve being tied to an annual contract like some other clubs tend to sting you with.
Another great incentive is that most of the LivingWell (LW) centres offer special "Free Day" where you can sample most if not all of the centre's training courses and then decide for yourself if you want to join.
One of the largest centres is the LivingWell Club at Queensway, Birmingham with a floor area of over 37000 sq feet and boasts a swimming pool, squash court, creche, solarium, aqua aerobics, sauna and a spacious gymnasium with all the usual equipment to help you beat off all that fat.
You have to prebook your Free Day, but on arrival you have to fill out a questionaire and go through various tests to make sure you're not taking on too much too soon; the professional instructors there off full guidance & knowledge of what is best for you at the initial stage of your training, although you are free to do what you want if you wish.
However, its best to go along with the Instructor's advise otherwise you may do yourself an injury which could put you off keep-fit for life. I opted for the treadmills, bike & the swimming pool to kick off my cobwebs and although I was well & truly shattered after about 4 hours I did feel quite refreshed & keen to carry on:which I have now done by becoming a member.
There are at least 70 of these LW centres around the country with new ones opening every couple of months or so. Each centre offers differing facilities, membership fees & opening hours. The Birmingham centres open from around 6 in the morning until 10:30pm during the week and 10 till 7 at the weekends.
Joining fees range from £100 to £250 depending on the size and facilities of each centre, and there's also a monthly sub which again varies from between £30 & £90.
LW Centres are, therefore, quite expensive, but they do offer top quality facilities, Instructors and dietary/fitness analysis & advice. And then of course there's the novelty value to consider. Usually once you've attend a few times the urge to carry on falters until you simply don't bother going at all. But you only pay a monthly sub so you can stop paying when you stop playing.
Overall I enjoyed my free day and would recommend these centres to anyone who wants to lose weight, tone up their bodies or simply enjoy a couple of hours peddling away with friends & colleagues.
