MagLite 2-D Cell Flashlight

Bright, light and robust

Disadvantages: not cheap

One part of either a backpacking or cycling camping trip is that at night it gets dark and if you?re away from city lights it can get incredibly dark. Some say it can be romantic, the dark night with stars shimmering away, the stars that you never really see in built up areas. But it also means you cannot see where you are going. Camp sites can be full of trip hazards (guy lines from tents for example) so a reliable torch is a must. So what torch do I use? My preferred torch for camping is one from the MagLite range of torches the model being the MagLite 2-C Cell Flashlight, I chose this because it is not too big and heavy (that is counter productive when space and weight are at a premium), also for me I want a torch that can give out a good light (this used to be very important when making my way back to the tent after a couple ...

Review of MagLite 2-C Cell Flashlight

Maglite, probably the best torches in the word

Advantages: Light output, build quality
Disadvantages: If I was to be really picky, then I would say its a little heavy

I have owned and still do own two Maglite torches. I have used Maglite torches for well over 10 years and have never had any problems whatsoever with them. Prior to me owning the 4 cell Maglite, I had owned the 6 cell, but due to the Energiser batteries leaking out (even though they were guaranteed not to) and ruining the 6 cell Maglite, although Energiser guaranteed to repair/replace any item that was ruined through using their batteries. Disappointingly though, Energiser sent me the 4 cell Maglite in place of the 6 cell (as they said the "6 cell was temporarily unavailable"?) and gave me some extra packs of the batteries to make up the cost. The 4 cell and the 6 cell are identical in terms of battery life (approx 15 hours continuous use) but the 6 cell has a light output of 20000 candlepower and the 4 cell has 15000 candlepower, but ...

Review of MagLite 4-D Cell Flashlight

You could land a plane with this!

Advantages: Very bright, adjustable beam focus, spare bulb, heavy and robust
Disadvantages: none

I rate this as excellent as because it it very practical, looks great and has a very powerful beam. The whole body is made of metal and when stuffed with 4 D cell batteries, it weighs quite a bit, which I kind of like. Security guards use these types of torches not only because they are great to see into dark places, but also because they double up as handy battons. Not that I would advocate their use as a weapon, but if you had to defend yourself, I'd rather be holding this torch than any other. I've found battery life to be pretty good. Haven't really counted the hours but with occasional use I haven't changed the batteries in over a year. As with most/all maglites, you get a spare bulb tucked into the end cap which is a good idea.
