There are a number of companies that will always sell lots of their product on their name alone. Over the years they build up a reputation that without having to advertise, people will buy their goods knowing they are making the right choice. In recent years, if you've asked anyone who needs a reliable light source which brand they would buy, a good number of them would say - MAGLITE.
I have owned Maglites of all sizes for a number of years and perhaps the most versatile in terms of something you can chuck into an overnight bag which is still very bright is the AA Mini-Maglite.
What is it? ======== Constructed from Lightweight Aluminium, this torch takes two AA batteries which are placed end to end inside the main barrel of the torch. The battery compartment is accessed by unscrewing the end of the torch furthest from the bulb. At the other end is a very small, but very, very bright, bulb compartment. The light is turned on and off by twisting the end of the torch that houses the bulb and lens. This also serves to alter the beam from being a wide beam that slightly illuminates a large area, or a spotlight that sends out a very concentrated beam of light that seems too bright for a torch of this size.
It comes in a huge variety of colours ranging from black to a plethora of bright metallic colours and it's possible to buy coloured lenses should you have a pressing need for red light as per every spy movie ever filmed.
The torch is most commonly sold in a presentation case along with two batteries and it's almost invariably sold in the shiny cabinets that stores such as Millets and Snow and Rock keep their Victorinox Pen knives in. The standard price, and it's nigh on impossible to find it any cheaper, is £14.99.
Is it any good and is it worth the money? ===============================
Yes it's excellent! I've used one for years at work and at home. The chances of it turning itself on in the bottom of your bag are negligible as it doesn't use a switch to do this. Unless you've got a pretty good idea that the batteries are dying, it will always greet you with a brilliant beam of light when you turn it on. The torch minus the batteries is extremely light and you'd imagine that this would be at the compromise of strength but that isn't the case. I'm not exactly light (I'm big boned!!) but I've stood on mine in heavy work boots and the torch has suffered no ill effects. I'd imagine a sharp impact on the lens may crack it but the chances of this happening aren't too high.
I've got quite a few friends who are either in the police or armed forces. They all swear by these torches due to their reliability. There is a trend now of LED torches made by another company and although brighter, they don't seem to have the same build quality as Maglite. I may well be wrong on this and would happily stand corrected, but people who rely on their torches for their safety, particularly my friends from the Boys in Blue all use AA Maglites and have the bigger 2D Torch, which is quite a lot bigger and brighter, in their equipment bags. Obviously I'm not saying that all the Police Forces in the UK solely use and endorse these torches but a lot of people I know swear by them!!
Maglite offer a lifetime guarantee on all of their products and I've yet to have to take advantage of this. The only problem I've had was when I put inferior batteries into mine and they leaked. I didn't really bother to see if this came within the remits of the guarantee and just bought a new one.
In terms of value for money, you can go out and spend 99p on a torch that takes the same number of batteries and has something approaching the brightness of beam. If you know exactly when you will want to use a torch and it doesn't really matter if it breaks then that's fine. If however, you'd rather spend a bit more, you'll be getting a very well made torch that in my experience will not let you down and you'll be amazed at how frequently you use it if it's with you and not stashed away in the cupboard under the stairs awaiting the next power cut.
I would highly recommend this product and feel it is worth every penny of it's seemingly steep price tag.
Advantages: Great Quality | Longlasting battery's | strong beam Disadvantages: not sure of any
*Intro
The Maglite Torch, an instrument used by both amateurs and professionals alike due to its robust design and various in-built quality features. A guy called Mr. Maglica, the founder of the Maglite Company in 1955, first built the Maglite in a small one-man shop in the U.S. Since then the company has grown vastly, and with it so has the reputation of the Maglite, it almost has the same reputation that say, Victrinox has in the knife industry, ... ...buy.
All of the Maglite torches have a changeable focus beam, from spot to flood to freestanding-candle light, in seconds. A spare bulb is also kept in the tail cap, just in case it breaks at the worst moment, so you wont be left without light for long.
*My Experiences
Well, I myself own the Maglite Solitaire, 2 AAA Cell, 2 AA Cell and the 4 D Cell models. All of which in terms of battery time have lasted for hours with a strong beam and have ...

Advantages: Light in the palm of your hand, compact rugged and great quality. Disadvantages: Base cap might be fidly for some people to remove.
...about this is there is MAGLITE branded across the front, you know where you hear this name you get nothing but the best, and that it will last!!! No more £1 market torches for you!
CONSTRUCTION:
The torch takes the form and design which is come in all the Maglite ranges, often making them instantly recognisable! The dimensions are, l = 14.5 cm diameter = 2.5 cm widest and 1.7cm at tail. So it’s quite small, and can be held comfortably ... ...I had finished my solitaire Maglite review the spare bulb in the fell out when taking pics, and I couldn’t find it for ages with out a torch!!! So that’s when this baby came in!). The output isn’t going to be amazing considering there are better bigger models in the range, but considering its size I was very impressive and score miles above other torches i have used. Compared to the solitaire it also does much better, however it seems to eat batteries ...

Advantages: Waterproof, shockproof, great design, bright Disadvantages: None!
I bought my maglite a couple of years ago. Since I do quite a lot of camping and going to music festivals, I thought it would be a good idea to invest in a good torch to see me through my camping adventures!
The maglite comes in a black plastic protective case. The case is rectangular in shape, it is about 17cm in length and 10cm in breadth and probably about 3cm thick. It has 'Mini Maglite' written across the front of it. This opens up to reveal ... ...instructions that come with the maglite are detailed and easy to follow and tell you everything you need to know (though really putting batteries in a torch and turning it on doesn't require too much reading!) The warrantee is also included in the instructions.
The maglite is not too heavy, being made of aluminium, and is easy to carry around therefore making it a great camping accessory. The bottom of the maglite screws open so that you can put ...

I purchased this Mini Maglite AA to accompany my larger 4 cell Maglite that I reviewed earlier.
The Mini Maglite AA, is made of Aluminium like the rest of the Maglite range. The Mini Maglite AA is approximately 150mm long and 20mm in diameter, I paid approximately £12 for my Mini Maglite AA off of the internet.
I have owned and still do own another Maglite torch. I have used Maglite torches for well over 10 years and have never had any problems ... ...does.
Most of the Maglite range have a feature on which gives the user the option to have either a wide beam of light or a narrow but long reaching beam of light. This is done by rotating the bulb end of the torch in either a clockwise or an anti clockwise direction, this then in turn gives you either a narrow or wide beam of light, the wide beam setting is ideal if you want to light the full width of the path that you are walking on, the narrower ...

Advantages: Exceptionally bright beam, easily adjustable beam from flood to spot, very high quality construction, very durable, comprehensive instructions, negligible running costs. Disadvantages: No indication of battery life at all (see review), high initial outlay, VERY difficult to locate in a shop as are the accessories (see review)
...customers. Coupling this with a desire to be the best, Mr Maglica decided to design and lauch a premium quality product which had to combine top spec, quality and reliability. So after a peroid of intensive research and development the Maglite Rechargable Flashlight system (originally termed MagCharger) was born -the rest is history.Further releases included thr MiniMagliteAA and AAA torches and the diminutive Solitaire torch powered by a single AAA battery. Finally Maglite were awarded recognition for their acheivements by being placed in a "what America does best" catergory in a leading publication.
History lesson over.
Well the Maglite Rechargable is a very special torch indeed. I purchaded mine from a shop called Five Ways High Fidelity in Islington Row Middleway, Birmingam back in 1993 for £120.
£120?
Oh yes the most...
