For years now, Manchester United and their kit manufacturers, Nike, have peppered their fans with a vast array of multi-coloured, so called 'trendy' replica away kits.
The fact of the matter is, no matter how much we complain, if people buy them, then Nike will continue to make them, it is as simple as that. Supply and demand and all that.
As a kit, the 2006/7 away strip is starting to get close to the colours United fans like. The Bryan Robson days of white shirts, black shorts and white socks. For some reason Nike have foregone the red trim of the classic United away kit, and replaced it with the gold to match in with the club training gear and the home kit.
This does, however, make for a nice kit, and the fact that the shorts and socks are interchangeable with the home kit are something which the greedy kit manufacturers don't normally allow us the luxury of.
To wear, the shirt is comfortable, and made with the dri-fit material, which I find doesn't stay very dry - it tends to mop up sweat like a sponge and then keep it there. The serious athlete will liken this to running around carrying an extra few pounds, which is not nice, particularly when the embroidery on the reverse of the badge begins to rub to create that dreaded affliction - footballers nipple. You get in the shower after the game to find that someone has blu-tacked two huge angry red strawberries to your chest.
Oh no - they are my nips. Sorry!
Otherwise, the kit is very presentable, but isn't anywhere near the classic adidas strips of the late 80's.
