Advantages: Good re-introduction to road bikes
Disadvantages: expense and pedals
...with narrowish tyres and straight handlebars or a drop handle bar proper road bike, with tyres so thin I could up up stuck in a drain grating.
The Trek 1.2 Double won the day after a very generous discount from the dealer.
The list price is £499 and I can't tell you publicly how good the reduction was! - but it was amazing - thanks Dave and Chris.
3 The Vital Details
If you look on the Trek site you will get the technical details of the bike among their glittering 2008 productions.
Some of the spec details would be meaningless to you - as some are still to me.
But the details that affected my choice and my experience include the following.
The Double is not a reference to the drink needed before venturing out on to the public highway, but to the double gear wheel on the front of the chainset, which results in doubling the back 8 gears...

Advantages: Easy to inflate. Good value. Portable. Very comfortable.
Disadvantages: You need an electricity supply for inflation.
...The Aerobed comes in various guises - single, double and king size and raised (at normal bed height) or as a stand alone mattress. Prices range from around £50 for a single mattress, to £140 for a raised king size bed.
All the beds come with an integrated pump, which inflates it automatically in just a minute for a mattress or three minutes for full size version. Unfortunately, this requires a mains electricity supply, so it is not ideal for camping, unless you have access to electricity. There doesn't seem to be a foot pump option included, which would be a useful extra.
I would recommend this bed wholeheartedly, however, as a spare bed for guests, or even as your main bed. It is incredibly comfortable and comes with its own valance. One advantage over a traditional bed is that, if you need the extra space in your room, it can...
