Advantages: genesis geometry, Good components Disadvantages: rather heavy forks, Fairl expensive
This is an excellent bike either for upgrading or for the occasional off road rider. I mean the components are good but they will soon become worn and need changing, for example...the pedals. I had the bike 8 months and i had to change them for some DMR V8's, But i Had used the bike every day, so fairs fair.
The best bit about this bike is the genesis geometry it means that at every point of riding (descending, climbing etc) the bike puts you in ... ...for climbing. And It actually works!! Wherever you point it, it will take you.
I am only slightly dissapointed about the forks (manitou sixs) though theyre pretty heavy and they dont really do much for soaking up small bumps. But they can be internally changed from 80mm to 100mm pretty easily.
Oh and it is a great looking bike black and silver.
So all said if you want a starter bike that you can rely on a cracking frame an then go on to upgrade ...
Advantages: Nimble, durable, versatile Disadvantages: Gearing too low for speed on downhills
I purchased a Gary Fisher Nirvana as a deeply discounted "clearance" item in the late 1990s, and have used it for short commuting and longer weekend rides ever since. The cro-moly frame and fork have worked smoothly and held up well, the wheels have taken a pounding without distorting, and the gears are still functioning without flaw. The small frame accepted fenders, luggage rack, and other unstylish but useful add-ons. This hybrid bike has been ... ...and off road use.
Gary Fisher sold his company to Trek in the early 1990s, and I suspect that some of the models have been "decontented" by Trek as Fisher's personal involvement in the product faded. A bike enthusiast that I know told me that this was a carry over of one of the last genuine Gary Fisher products. I have not ridden later versions of this model. That may be the source of the intense dissatisfaction of the reviewer who found the Nirvana ...
Advantages: nice weight to the rear of the bike allows for good climbing Disadvantages: the bike is heavy overall
Recently Saab and Gary Fisher extended me a very unique invitation. On Saturday, May 20, 2000, they were holding an event called The Gary Fisher/Saab Test Drive. It was held at Green Mountain Park near Morrison, Colorado.
Green Mountain Park is one of the Denver area’s nicer mountain bike trails. It is also located two miles north of Bandemere Speedway. I’m sure it was no accident that Gary Fisher and Saab picked this location for their test ... ...a registered owner of a Gary Fisher Big Sur mountain bike. I love my bike, and wrote a detailed review on it back on February 5th.
I brought my bike with me to compare my Big Sur to the newer Gary Fisher models head-to-head. I did this for a few reasons. First and foremost, I wanted to remember exactly how my bike felt in case I fell in love that day with a 2000 model year bike. Second of all, I knew I would be writing a review for Epinions.

My friend brought this bike a few months back and has kindly allowed me to review it. First off, its a budget dirt jump bike, so you get what you pay for. The gearing leaves a bit to be desired, and the overall feel of the bike isnt excellent. The specifications are quite good, but for the price it doesnt feel like much thought has been put into it. Again, the gearing is very low end. But for a first time mountain biker you could do far worse than ... ...own bike from scratch you would obviously save quite a bit of money. I cant really reccomend any other entry level stock bikes either, since most at this price range seem to fail in the same areas. It really would be a good idea to build it from scratch if you could. ...
This bike has a really good spec, XT rear mech excellent proformer the only thing that lets it down is the tyres they are a bit prone to punctures when used on road and are really only for off road use. i think that the forks are a bit on the heavy side but still work grate. for the price range would be hard to beat this spec. in my opinion the bike rides really well on cross country trails and is vary smooth and well balanced. i have used my bike ...
