Scott Reflex 20 - A good all rounder.
Review of Scott Reflex 20D by

Advantages: Good frame, Fast climber, Well specced. Good to upgrade over time.
Disadvantages: Tyres wear out quickly, Can't fit big tyres.
I bought my Reflex 20 about 6 months ago. From the off she was upgraded so I can only give you the low down on what I rode.
Upgrades are tyres, pedals, stem, forks and brakes.
I ride a bit of all terrains. Commuting to work along a 6 mile route that rakes in a bit of road, steep hills and some smooth single track, worth the slight detour, so it gave me a good indication of where the bikes strengths and weaknesses were.
Strengths:
The frame is ... ...hardtail riding as smooth as a FS, but she handles fast downhill sections very well and takes all the abuse I have thrown at it in it's stride and climbing is great with the frame putting everything in the right place. I upgraded my forks and brakes so I cannot comment on them but it seems well specced for the price. The wheels are also up to the tasks as I have hit a few rocks and ramps and they still track as true as they did from new.
The gears ...

Scott Reflex FX-25
Review of Scott Reflex FX-25 by

Advantages: Rear shock lock-out
Disadvantages: Crap OEM tyres
Bought one about 6 months ago, in preference to a Giant Trance 2. The lockout for the rear shock really made the deal for me, as I do a fair bit of tarmac riding. Locking the rear suspension really reduces power-sapping bounce and sag when pedalling hard.
The only thing I'd complain about is the relatively poor OEM tyres. I've now swapped these for some High Rollers and all is sweet.
I have to add fifty three more words here in order to be able ...

Trek 4300
Review of Trek 4300 by

Advantages: Lightweight, Durable, Value for Money
Disadvantages: No lock out on the forks, no disc brakes, poor quality chainset
...After coming across the Trek 4300 my mind was quickly made up, lovely lightweight frame that wouldn't be out of place on bikes twice the price. A reasonable set of Shimano Alvio shifters and forks with adjustable pre-load.
Perfect for what I wanted, something I could commute to work on but also give a good thrashing around the local MTB routes.
The bike is versatile, the adjustable pre-load works well and although the forks aren't fantastic, they'll ... ...off 6 foot drop offs.
The only things really letting this bike down are the Suntour SR cranks. Mine were poorly fitted and the pedals had been cross threaded which meant that when I went to fit some SPD pedals it stripped the threads rendering the cranks useless. Que an upgade to a Shimano Deore chainset and the bike is now even better than it was.
One thing to note is that if you're planning on getting into mountain biking, I would seriously consider ...
