Advantages: Reasonable Price Disadvantages: Rather large if backpacking
...and I can see why. The mat is hard wearing and comfortable thanks to the open cell foam design. The non-slip polyester underside prevents the mat from slipping whilst you sleep. It is easy to inflate and de-flate, in fact the self-inflate mechanism means you only need a few breaths to bring it up to the desired pressure. When you packing up you can simply deflate, roll and pack. At this point I can't stress enough the difference between a normal foam mat and one of these. Advantages: Cheap, light, the back packers friend Disadvantages: Bulky, can damage pride if mate beats you in combat ;o)
...These mats changed my whole life! I've been going camping for donkey's years and therefore will probably have serious back trouble when I hit 45. But these mats may have just saved me years of agro in the future.
Of course, they aren't THE most important piece of kit (a tent and a sleeping bag are), they can certainly help you have a comfortable nights sleep- even if you happen to be sleeping directly over an unconveniently positioned rock.
These mats can be bought for as little as a fiver. Don't mess about with these camp bed things you get in Argos and everywhere else because they are too bulky and heavy and these mats work just as well. They also have the advantage of being extremely light (as they are made of foam) and can also be used in armed combat with your camping buddies when rolled up! What more can you want?
