Essential Equipment For the Great Outdoors!
Advantages: Lots of detailed information Disadvantages: Expensive, rather large when fully opened up
When I look back to my early childhood it would seem that not long after I had learned to read and write that I had mastered the skill of map reading. Most weekends my Parents would take my Brother and myself up onto the Moors and I was always the one that was in charge of the map and the compass.
My obsession with maps is without a doubt one of the things that has instilled within me a passion for the great outdoors and there are few tools more ... ...map. The Landranger series of maps, produced by the Ordnance Survey, quickly became my bible and the shelves on my bedroom wall were quickly filled with more and more of the distinctive pink coloured maps as I persuaded my Dad to buy more and more.
There are actually 204 different maps within the Landranger series, which when put together cover every square millimetre of England, Scotland, and Wales, including all of their offshore Islands like ...

Timex Expedition For Outdoor Explorers
Advantages: Comfort, affordability, water resiliant and light weight. Disadvantages: Compass can let you down
Timex Group is the parent of Timex Group USA, Inc. It is situated in Middlebury, Connecticut where it began in 1854 and was known during the nineteenth century as the "Sister company Waterbury Watch". The company made their very first watch in 1880. In 1933 they made the very first Mickey Mouse clock where Mickey's hand pointed the time. They made history by being the first company to actually make a Mickey Mouse clock and I am so glad that they ... ...first created the wristwatch named Timex for the UK market place. Portable, accurate and easy to use
Advantages: Lightweight, accurate, easy to use Disadvantages: Not really any
This is an extremely useful piece of kit, I originally purchased it to use for Geocaching but now use it as a pedometer as well, its great for parking up in the countryside and setting your car as a waypoint, you can then wander around knowing you'll always be able to get back to the car.
The menu system is pretty intuitive and doesn't take long to pick up at all, it tracks maximum speed, average speed, time moving, distance travelled, distance ...

I Love My Geko
Advantages: Small, Works Perfectly Disadvantages: Doesn't have the best spec on the market (if you want that)
...me and bought me a Garmin Geko 201 GPS and it's beautiful. It caters exactly to my needs and is a nice handy size.
But I'll start at the beginning so you know exactly what this model does…
Geocaching
For those who don't know about geocaching, you might want to pay a quick visit to www.geocaching.com Geocaching is the exciting, and rather geeky, hobby of using a GPS (or a map if you so wish) to go for nice pleasant walks and search for hidden ... ...offer.
I use the Garmin Geko 201 for walking and geocaching and it works perfectly for these activities. You can store quite a few waypoints, but you are limited in the length of labels you put on them. The GPS is really light and is supposedly waterproof, but I won't test it! The batteries are AAAs and seem to last ages - so long as you remember to turn the GPS off after you've finished using it! Price wise I can't help so much with as I received ...

Rugged excellent outdoor GPS unit Garmin Geko 201
Advantages: rugged, waterproof, reliable, accurate Disadvantages: none
...hobby called Geocaching and our Garmin Geko 201 is invaluable to us. Our hobby involves downloading co-ordinates to the PC, which we can then transfer to the Garmin via a serial cable. You can of course input them manually.
My advice is to read the manual carefully as it may not be the most obvious piece of kit to use. (isn't that what manuals are for? ) Once you get used to it it is a very simple unit to use.
It is rugged, waterproof and has a ... ...given (plus clues sometimes) and invariably the garmin gets us close.
All in all this is an impressive piece of kit. There are others on the market with more whistles and bells but if you want a good GPS unit for not a lot of money. This is it ...
