Newmarket is the only place within the UK to have two racecourse, the July Course and the Rowley Mile. Newmarket is famous for its racing community and it houses many famous horse racing attractions such as the National Stud, the Horseracing Museum and the British Racing School. Racing in Newmarket takes place throughout the summer months and races are run on grass over flat courses with no jumps. The Rowley Mile operates race days in the spring and autumn while the July Course has meetings in the mid summer months.
PRICE Prices vary at both courses throughout the year. Big meetings can cost up to £40 a ticket for the premier enclosures but tickets on these days can be as low as £8 in the garden enclosure. The different enclosures contain different facilites and viewing grandstands but you will still be able to view the racing from all areas clearly. Children Under 16 get in free to all race meetings except the music nights at the July Course where it costs £10 for a child. Parking at both courses is free except in the premier car parks. In a recent survey racing came out as the cheapest spectator sport for a family of four to enjoy for the day including snacks and drinks but many people like to take picinics to the racecourse and this is encouraged at both courses.
FACILITIES AND ATTRACTIONS Both courses try to supply attractions for all of the family and have many themed days. Play areas including bouncy castles and fun fair rides are provided free of charge at most meetings. The July course holds popular music meetings throughout June, July and August and many top acts have performed in recent years including Girls Aloud, Bryan Adams and the ever popular Jools Holland. Music evenings are held in Friday nights and often sell out. The horse racing at both courses of a top quality and is usually highly competitve due to the high amounts of prize money on offer. The top meetings in the summer are the three day July Cup Festival and The Cambridgshire Meeting in the Autumn. Horse Racing in Newmarket is often an international affair and it is usually possible to meet see many top faces in the sport. Both courses offer racecourse tours and can give guests a behind the scenes view of the race track. Many competitions such as best dressed lady and gentleman and offers are available at big meetings.
LOCATION Newmarket is easy to get to from the A14 and has good public transport links with bus and train routes. Shuttle buses run from both Cambridge and Newmarket town centre to the racecourse on race days and both courses have good sized taxi ranks. Newmarket has many hotels to cope with its many visitors throughout the summer season but these can get fully booked well in advanced before the bigger meetings.
Newmarket racecourse is highly recommended for a family fun day or an adult party as there are many different themed meetings.
