I first came across Nikwax when I was walking around my old local Country Wide store, I'd bought my fiancé a rather expensive mad dog camouflage fleece that was waterproof and I need something that was going to keep it water resistant and also re-proof it, the collection of Nikwax products at the end of one of the aisle caught my eye and so I started to read the bottles until I happened upon the bottle of Polar Proof.
The bottle itself is white with a purple screw cap; the picture on the front is of a fleece with water droplets sitting on the surface, the front also reads, "wash-in waterproofing for fleece, ski wear, wool and fibre pile" - pretty obvious what it's for then really. So I promptly marched to the till and paid. The bottle I bought was 300ml and cost around £7.00, to be honest I was a little disgruntled by the price especially as the bottle stated that 300ml would only proof a single fleece item 3 times, regardless I still purchased this product.
When I got back home I sat down and read the bottle over and then decided to give it a go, they recommend that you wash whatever it is you're going to proof with Nikwax Tech Wash first but I have never done that and It's never been a problem. Alas, using the stuff is easy, throw whatever it is you're going to proof into the washing machine and pour 2 caps full; that's 100ml of Polar Proof into the detergent dispenser. (You need 3 cap fulls/150 ml for 2 - 3 items) then set your machine to run a 40˚ synthetic cycle. If you don't have a washing machine then you can also hand wash, simply soak your item(s) in a bowl of warm water then poor in 100ml for 1 item or 150ml for 2-3 items; Agitate the water to mix together and then leave to soak for 5 minutes, after the 5 minutes are up rinse the item(s) thoroughly in cold water until the water runs clear. Drying is easy too, depending what the garment care label says you can either leave the item(s) to drip dry or shove it straight into your tumble dryer on a low setting.
