The toe and heel boxes are in anti-abrasion treated PU. Anatomical breathable arch-support. Asymmetrical Speed Lacing System: The special Speed Lacing System with fast- running laces and with a Velcro strap closure assures simple and homogeneous blocking. Advantages: Control, power transfer, efficiency etc Disadvantages: You might fall off once or twice....
...around / pushing you do you might want a more flexible sole; the more flexible the better for walking but the worse for power transfer to pedal) & fixing. Also style if you plan to walk around in them!!
I have a set M535 (LX) shimano pedals as well as a set of cheap M646 platform copies from wellgo.
On the shoe front I use Northwave arctics in the winter (the only shoe to have in the cold; Northwave use a shimano sole with their own upper), Specialized comp in summer & a set of Lake "skate stylee" shoes if I gotta walk anywhere in them!...

...the shoe is at the lower end of the shimano range but offers great value for money when picked up on - line at end of season sales.
Tough suede and rubber shell with cambrelle lining makes for a comfortable shoe, both laces and velcro strap offer adequete fastenings and it looks pretty good, a stiff sole allows fairly comfortable walking when needed.
Sizing can be a problem due to the ridiclues small system that cycleshoes go by. Its a narrow shoe so make sure not only length but width is accounted for when choosing.Roughly 1 to 2 sizes above normal shoe size should be okay.
The attachement of cleats is pretty straight forward as one would expect from shimano, instructions in multi language format are easily understood...

For those who may not know SPD stands for Shimano Pedaling Dynamic. All very nice I hear you say, so to explain they are Clipless pedals. Basically you get a pair of shoes, bolt on some clips to the shoes, get a pair of SPD pedals which are like a clamp, step on the pedals and your feet are locked to the pedals. Rotating your feet to the side then releases you from the pedal. (not as dangerous as it sounds).
GENERAL
Shimano mountain bike shoes have been around for a number of years now and in my opinion if you are a user of SPD pedals then you can't beat Shimano PSD shoes for reliability. I have used number if different types over the years, most of which I cant remember the name off and ones that usually found the bucket because they broke...

One of my favourite things about going on holiday is the fact I get extra time to read. In the evening when there is no internet to distract me, only 5 terrestrial channels and a baby in bed the best thing to do is t curl up on the sofa and read.... more
There has been a series of killings in the subdued small town of Tarker Mills. Reports of a large wolf like creature prowling the town are greeted with a mixture of disbelief and fear. Yet as the killings become more and more violent it is clear that no more
