Advantages: Control, power transfer, efficiency etc Disadvantages: You might fall off once or twice....
...cheaper though!
A lot of people worry that they won't be able to release from spds's; yes that can be a problem initially but I recently saw someone who's used to spd's fall off a bike equipped with toe clips!! It's all about what you're used to! I think I fell of mine about 3 or 4 times max due to not being able to release a pedal!
Time atacs generally have more float than spd's (5 degrees) which can help if you've got dodgy knees although some say they don't feel positive enough! They also clear better in muddy conditions making it easier to "find" the pedal.
Prices generally start at £15 -£20 for a basic set of spd copy pedals & go up to about £80 for top of the range shimano's & carbon Atacs.
Shoes can be picked up from £20 to £120 depending on spec but things to look for are warmth, sole stiffness (depending on how much walking...

Advantages: Price, Components, Performance Disadvantages: Lack of "street-cred"
...scared me off. So I was looking at the fitness and road racing models. There is significant choice in the market so I set my price bracket at £600 - £800, which narrowed it down quite considerably. I then set about looking for the bike that gave me the best balance of components and frame geometry against the price.

The components are all provided by Shimano and specified to a reasonable level - Shimano's 105 series sits mid-way in the range of price/performance.
I found a local bike shop that sold the bike and went for a test ride, at the same time comparing it to several other bikes from other brands in the same price bracket. The Giant was head and shoulders above...

The bike and the ride
In late summer of 2005 I purchased a Bianchi Via Nirone 7 from Evans online at the website (http://www.evanscycles.com/) and was impressed with the delivery within 3 days. The parcel was well protected and all I had to do was open one end of the box, wheel the bike out, adjust the handlebar orientation and basically it was good to go riding. I changed the saddle for a Bontrager Race X Lite saddle as an upgrade - saddle selection is a very personal choice for comfort on the long rides. After inflating the tyres to a high pressure (I use 100psi to allow for the humps and bumps on the Great British roads). The handling of this bike with carbon fibre forks, stem and seat post...
