+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ...I spotted the One Body Side Swing Mini Stepper. It looked like it might fit the bill - it was relatively small and not too heavy, it cost just under £35 and was very straightforward to use and remembering my days in the gym I did recall I had been quite happy on their step machines and that is important because if you don't like a piece of kit you will not use it regularly.
I took the plunge, loaded it into my shopping trolley and ... more
I'll be the first to admit that I don't get as much exercise as I used to, especially in the winter months. In the Summer I am happy to spend time outdoors in the garden doing physically demanding jobs but when it is cold ouside I do tend to be quite content sitting in front of the fire.
However I also acknowledge that in order to stay healthy I should make sure I am getting some cardiovascular exercise.
Cardiovascular exercise is also known as areobic exercise and is any sustained, rhythmic activity that involves large muscle groups. It makes the heart and lungs work harder as the body's need for oxygen is increased. Previous generations used to get lots of cardiovascular exercise in the days before we used cars to get everywhere and had a vast range of power gadgets around the home and workplace to do most of the physical things for us. We have to some extent become lazy and unused to physical exercise so many people are now seeking ways to get more exercise - I am no exception.
There are numerous benefits for health and general well being to be gained from regular cardiovascular exercise:
Increased energy levels
Reduced stress and improved mental health (due to the release of endorphins in the brain)
Increased heart and lung efficiency
Reduced blood pressure and resting heart rate which in turn reduces the risk of stroke or heart attack.
It can also help is weight loss as undertaking activities that burn large amounts of calories is an excellent addition to a calorie controlled diet to help shift unwanted pounds.
So, having convinced myself that I needed to do something about getting some more exercise to benefit my general health and wellbeing, I needed to find a way to do it. I considered jogging but in the winter in the rural area where I live it is quite dangerous along the narrow country lanes so I discounted that in much the same way as I did cycling for the same reasons. I do not like swimming so that really only left either joining a gym or exercising at home.
I have done both in the past and I was quite good at being a regular attender at the gym however there isn't one nearby and the half an hour journey there and back would put an hour onto my day before doing any exercise which meant I was left with considering exercise at home.
So I looked around for something to meet my needs - it needed to be compact and easy to store, not too expensive, easy to use, not too noisy and effective.

Whilst shopping in Tesco one Saturday morning I spotted the One Body Side Swing Mini Stepper. It looked like it might fit the bill - it was relatively small and not too heavy, it cost just under £35 and was very straightforward to use and remembering my days in the gym I did recall I had been quite happy on their step machines and that is important because if you don't like a piece of kit you will not use it regularly.
I took the plunge, loaded it into my shopping trolley and took it with all my groceries to the checkout. My journey down the 'home exercise' route had begun.
I unpacked it from its box and quickly glanced at the instructions. Basically there was nothing much to do to prepare it for use. Just twist the knob between the foot pedals to the right amount of resistance to suit you and then place each foot on a foot pedal and you are ready to go. Put your weight on each foot in turn and you are away with your first exercise routine. I also discovered an added bonus - leave the box on its side for just a few minutes and it becomes a great hiding place for the cat (why is it cats love empty boxes so much?)
It is recommended that you place something on the floor under the machine when you are using it in case of any leaks of hydraulic fluid although to be honest I have never noticed any leaks at all in use. It is very quiet in use and I like this feature because it means it is really easy to use it whilst watching TV which does help to relieve the boredom.
The manufacturers suggest that you start with 12 minutes exercise and then gradually increase it from there. Given that you can adjust the degree of resistance you should be able to adjust this equipment to suit your indivdual needs and level of fitness. It might not be the most exciting piece of exercise equipment around but it does do the job quite well and, in the couple of months I have had it, I have noticed increasing levels of fitness and a firming up of hips and thighs.
What I do like about the One Body Side Swing Mini Stepper is that it is small and can easily be tucked out of the way. The problem with exercise bikes is they are cumbersome and you don't really want one in your lounge (or at least I don't) so in my house they tend to get neglected in the spare room. Using the One Body Side Swing Mini Stepper I can generally manage a few minutes exercise most days which I think is a positive. I do it whilst I am watching TV and find it relatively easy to stand there shifting from foot to foot whilst concentrating on the programme - that way the times passes quite quickly and before I know it my little exercise is finished.
How often should you exercise? ++++++++++++++++++++++++++
To achieve good cardiovascular fitness it is generally recommended to exercise 3 to 5 times a week and for 30-60 minutes. You should start with less than this though and gradually build up to it if you have not exercised for some time.
The main thing is to ensure that your heart and lungs are worked hard enough and for long enough to gain the benefits of aerobic exercise but not so long that you run the risk of injury. To check whether you are working out at the correct intensity, you should be out of breath but still capable of speaking!
Would I recommend it? ++++++++++++++++++++
Yes I would - but only as part of a wider system of exercise. The One Body Side Swing Mini Stepper on its own will not give you total fitness as it does nothing for the upper body. It will help you to achieve a cardio vascular work out and it will exercise your lower body but it isn't a complete exercise machine. However the fact that it is small and compact and almost silent in use means (certainly in my case) that it is more likely to be used than put in another room and ignored. However if you live near some great outdoor space where you have easy access to exercising facilities them perhaps it is not for you?
Advantages: Good workout, Disadvantages: Can be boring
I own one of these steppers, not this particular model, but from the read up it does exactly the same.
I purchased mine for around £40.00 from Argos. It has an adjustor which you turn to tension the feet pedals but other than that, there is nothing to it.
It also has a computer which tells you how many strides you have done, how many calories you have burned (supposedly) how long you have been working for etc. The one thing I don't like about this ... ...of minutes of inactivity. I like to use it in short bursts over the day but I find I have to write down what I have done each time and then add them all together at the end of the day.
This machine also has the lateral action and yes, you definitely do feel the advantages of using this machine. It is small and compact, although quite heavy so ideally you need somewhere to store it that is close to where you want to use it.
I tend to store mine ...
