You can get all this done at your local Ping stockist, or on the Ping UK website, however I would not recommend that as I was advised on the 'gold dot' online but at my ping fitting I was told green dot was the correct one for me.

Ok, i'm not going to bore you with the science of golf irons, if a reveiwer started going on about the science you would be so confused that you wouldn't know which iron to get.

Go into any golf shop and you can buy a number of makes straight off the shelf, but what if you are 6 foot 5, or 5 foot 6? all the irons on the shelf are the same size and have the same degree of lie on the floor. Ping irons have 10 different degree of lie ranging from: gold to maroon 'dot', the dot on the golf club is spasific to how you hold the club, and how you place it on the floor. lets go back to the shelf iron. If you are 6 foot 5 say the iron may not lay on the floor flush and the toe end on the club may be higher up thus on impact with the ball it will scrape through the grass making you slice the ball, on the other hand if you are 5 foot the heel may be lower down on the floor and the toe higher making you hook the ball, i may have the hook and slice the wrong way round but I hope you get the general idea. The golf club when fitted correctly should lay flat with the whole of the sole laying flush on the ground giving you a swift hitting action that catches nothing but the ball.

The 'dot' begins at 'gold' with a 4 degree flat and ends at maroon which is 5 degree upright, so you have a 10 degree difference between gold and maroon. Black dot is standard and i guess that is what you get off the shelf in any pro shop.

Right after all that I had better tell you about the irons.

In the last year i have had 2 sets of irons, in the past 3 years I have had around 4 sets, each on off the shelf. I have had Callaway X14, Lynx blackcat, Nike slingshot, Wilson 1200, but always felt that the clubs where not right for me. I rand up my local Ping specialist and booked a fitting, and received my irons around 2 weeks later. i had not played golf in around 3 weeks, and was very impressed with the feel. Being a 18 handicapper i'm proned to making mistakes, and my main mistake in not being able to play consistant. My irons did lay flush on the ground and i felt very comfortable with them. i was hitting my 7 iron around 130 to 140 yards and the main fact was it was straight. I didn't like a 3 or 4 iron in my bag but i have lots of confidence in my 4 iron off the tee maybe getting 180 yards and most of the time straight. The sand iron feels very comfortable and i rarely thin the ball, and have much more confidence in the sand.

all I can say at around £440 for a set of 8 irons, mine is 4 to sand iron, but you can get 3 to sand iron you really do get a great club. i am not a long hitter but i find at my club if i am straight and on the fairway i get a great oppertunity to get to the green in regulation, rather than slicing the ball into the rough and chipping out then hitting to the green. I'm getting more par oppertunities now.

Up to now ive played 5 rounds of golf with them, my first game was level par, then a 2 over par 72. i played in a stableford, and was 3 under after 17 but hit a 8 on a par 5 18th. last week hit a 36 points in a stableford. I feel more confidence now and can't wait for the summer to come, my object is to get down to 14 or 15 by end of next summer and with my Ping irons i feel i can do that.
