Advantages: Fun short book Disadvantages: Small writing
for would Mr Lazy be able to get Mr Busy and Mr Bustle to become more lazy?
MY OPINION
This is another great fun little book in the collection. My boys love listening to me read about how lazy Mr Lazy is and the illustrations help to show this and help to keep my 3 year old involved in the book. The book has been written using nice simple words so is easy to follow.
The story is only short and can be read in a few minutes so I am finding that this is an great bedtime read. The book has been set out in a very easy to follow way with the writing on plain white pages on the left hand side of the book and the illustrations on the right hand side of the book. The writing which has been used is quite small which puts new readers off reading the books independently but my eldest is managing very well with some encouragement to do this on his ...
Advantages: Enjoyable read, insight into the Amish life Disadvantages: None that I found
takes so much longer and things can't be done until the cows are milked and the chores are completed. I also enjoyed the courtroom drama and could see this book working well as a film as there is a lot of suspense.
Finally I liked the love story. I can't say too much about this because it would spoil the plot but there is a love story on many different levels. There is a sad story of love that has to be set free but also one of new beginnings.
Quite often I flick through the first part of the book, the bit about the author and the acknowledgement and get right into the story. However I have found that with Picoult's books the information at the start gives a fascinating insight into the novel and her way of writing.
The book is dedicated to her father "who taught me to be an original", I think this is a wonderful irony as here ...
Advantages: Fascinating subject, great ethical debate, Ellie Disadvantages: Other characters aren't so great, scrappy in places
Jodie Picoult has established herself as one of the best writers of contemporary crime/courtroom fiction - and one of my favourite current writers - and this shows in Plain Truth. Whilst it isn't her best novel, it's extremely thought-provoking and a pleasure to read. As with her other fiction, Plain Truth explores the ethics surrounding a situation where a person has been accused of a crime. Unlike any of her other novels (so far, anyway), this is a violent crime where the accused is Amish.
For those who don't know, the Amish community lives in Pennsylvania and its people are also known (incorrectly) as the Pennsylvanian Dutch. They live in a largely self-contained farming community, speaking a dialect derived from German and practicing a denomination of Christianity. Religion is central to the Amish community and they live with very ...
