I’m older, fatter and less fit than I want to be, so it’s off to the gym, three or more times a week for me!
During the working day, the most exercise I get is altering the angle of my headset or pressing “ctrl alt del” for a hard reset, so it is important that when I am exercising I do not overdo it!
This is where my Polar Beat heart rate monitor comes into its own.
The transmitter fits onto the chest with a washable elastic strap, and the monitor is in the form of a watch.
To activate the monitor and the transmitter, simply hold them close to each other for a few seconds.
They both switch off automatically.
Your accurate heart rate is displayed within seconds and, with the help of your personal trainer or the Heart Rate Charts (displayed at most gyms)you can work out safely and achieve the results you require without putting too much or too little strain on your heart.
If you want a truly affordable and simple way to monitor your heart rate during exercise and don't won't any other features, then the Polar Beat is ideal. There are no buttons to fumble with and a large easy-to-read display to make checking your heart rate at any moment a breeze. Yet it gives you the same accuracy you would get with an ECG. For you swimmers, Polar Beat is water resistant to 20 meters.
Better than this, the machines in our gym are mainly Cybex and Reebok and the Polar Beat transmits your heart rate to these machines so that you can exercise within your recommended heart rate range at a glance! Expensive? No - mine was less that £40!

Advantages: unobtrusive Disadvantages: It didn't work on me
On starting yet another keep fit regime I decided to try one of these. This one had been recommended to me by my local gym, its an entry level and low priced. I bought it mail order for £34.99. What is it? It's basically a small computer which lets you know your safe exercising target range. In other words the harder you work the harder your heart works, if you work too hard so does your heart and this can sometimes do more harm than good. It shows ... ...gyms now have charts showing your taining range, based on your age, sex and weight. Also my local gym uses machines that work along with this heart monitor, so your reading shows on the machine display as well. Its waterproof too, so you can even use it swimming.
Easy to put on, straps around lower chest with an elastic belt. Watch/monitor on wrist and away you go.
Mine worked well for around 3 uses then stopped, exchanged it for another one. Same ...
