I have worked at a riding school for a few years now and have often seen the usual problems associated with the horses having to wear their saddles for a longer than normal period of time. Some of the horses had experienced ‘cold backs’ and often being ridden by inexperienced riders created pressure points from poor balance. I can now say with confidence that many of these problems were eliminated by the purchase of Polypads, these tough, durable, comfy numnahs have provided much needed protection and cushioning, and have been a great success. They are available in a range of styles, saddle shaped and rectangular, and also several thickness, they stay in place very well without the use of straps. They have a generous cut and fit very well to the horses back. The only problem I found was that in some cases they were too thick and caused more sweating than would normally be found with an ordinary numnah, especially in winter. Careful choice of the right thickness should prevent this for normal everyday use. Although they can be more expensive than conventional numnahs, I think you pay for what you get. There are still Polypads on the yard that have been hanging around for over 5 years! Another good point is the ease of washing, just bung it in the washing machine, hang it out to dry and it’s done.
I would thoroughly recommend this product as I have found it to be very practical and versatile.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
First of all let me comment on your writing, I am one of these people that reads the beginning first and then the end, I usually skip the rest. However, I found your article to be a good read.
Secondly, I agree...I think Polypads are wonderful, I recently got an ex racehorse who was underweight and once he started getting fitter and bigger I had a saddle made to fit him, only I decided that as he was expanding everyday, I would get the saddle made for what he would end up being in the girth etc... Because of this the saddle was slighlty too big for him at first, although I wasn't riding him until he was up to weight I did need to lunge him with his saddle on etc to get him used to it again (he was very green and spooky), I decided to invest in a Polypad as it was thick and it filled him out enough for the saddle, it worked a treat and I still use it to ride him in now and then. My only downfall to this is recently I got a Robinson's sale catlaouge through and they do thier own version of a Polypad and in the sale it was under £10!!! I paid nearly £30 for mine! I agree Polypads are worth it but Id say shop around first.
