Advantages: Wide array of features - gear stick, paddles, force feedback, brake and accelerator peddles Disadvantages: Can be time consuming to set up, compatibility problems on dated systems/games
Steering wheels are the ultimate accessory for any racing game enthusiast. Unfortunately they can also be a real pain to set up. I got this wheel two years ago to use with some of the rally and formula 1 racing games that I own.
Performance wise its the best wheel I've ever used. It has very responsive pedals and good powerful force feedback from the wheel (it has its own power supply for feedback). Also if you're into gear changing then there's the option of either the gearstick or gear-shift paddles behind the wheel. Personally I found the gearstick a bit awkward to use on games but the paddles behind the wheel are really comfortable and easy to use.
The main problem I have found with this game is compatibility although these problems may only be unique to my system ( a Win 98 pII 400mhz ). I was generally able to get the wheel ...
Advantages: Sturdy design, rubberised grip, force feedback Disadvantages: pedal problem
-slip mechanism (a pop-down set of spikes) to prevent slippage on carpet, which is very effective. There are also rubber pads to stop slipping on hard surfaces. However, there is a problem with the pedals in my wheel, and other, which is addressed below.
Force feedback - This has been very good on all my racing games - especially Toca Race Driver 2. The force feedback effects and centering spring are fully adjustable in the Control Panel.
3-way clamping system - There are three screwlock mechanisms which enable the wheel to be securely fastened to the desk.
Software included - this includes the steering wheel drivers, and an editing package which allows you to customise the wheel for all your games.
USB connectivity - fully compatible with Windows 98SE, ME, 2000 and XP
Two Year Guarantee ...
Advantages: Great force feedback wheel. Pedals, feedback, installation, all good. Disadvantages: Pricey. Slightly flismy switch quality.
Oh yeah. The Thrustmaster Force Feedback Racing Wheel sure is a stunner. I'm not sure why I spent all of £82 of my hard-earned on it in the first place, but that didn't seem to matter. I coupled it with Midtown Madness 2 (which only just came out, I pre-ordered it for £15!) and began to enjoy pleasure. My friends say "this game wouldn't be fun without the wheel" to almost every driving game with the wheel, signifying two things: that they don't like driving games much, and of course the wheel rules. Which it does.
I installed it on a Windows 98 SE system, and using the provided installation CD, used my USB port to plug in. Worked flawlessly, a little playing around in the Test Forces tab later, I was ready to go. There is also a serial option on the cable, however I have not used this. A little niggle about installation is the el ...
