...2 months and about 800km's of very wet and muddy riding (including Transwales 08 race) they still run like the day i fitted them - only time will tell on reliability, but first impressions are that they will last well. Even if they do need maintenance, shimano stock everything you need to rebuild them.
Conclusion:
They do everything that a normal spd pedal would do, but much, much better. As much as it pains me to say it, they are another quality product from shimano....

...Why would you want a pair?
Clip-in pedals originally developed for road bikes, have found their way onto cross country mountain bikes. A metal plate called a cleat is bolted to a specially adapted shoe. The cleat engages in a sprung loaded clip on the pedal, holding the foot in the most efficient position. You disengage the clip by rotating the shoe. They also enable you to pull on the up-stroke improving power, although the power benefits are relatively modest.
The major advantage of clip-in pedals is that it enables you to perfect a smooth circular pedal stroke. Next time you're out on a flat piece of road/track, drop a gear, unclip one side and try pedalling with one leg. So long as they spin round, push the crankset in the right direction, and give you somewhere to rest your feet, they are of little interest.
Remember your first bike? Maybe you do, but you could probably not tell me what the pedals were made of, what weight they were, how much they cost, what cleat system they used, or how easy they were to service.!!
However, as bikes have become more complicated, and folk have more money to spend on personalizing them, the pedals have attracted more attention.
Here is a good example - the Shimano A530 SPD's.
