Advantages: Good quality product Disadvantages: Heavy when taking abroad
...go and sit in once of those sensory depravation chambers.
Given that a torch relies on a number of not very sturdy components that are prone to breaking having a back up torch is essential. In over 100 dives I have had need to use my backup torch on three dives, once because I had the battery around the wrong way in my main torch (for which I was fined a round of beers by my fellow club members), once because the charge ran out while on a night dive in the Red Sea, and the third time was when the torch flooded and the bulbs went pop.
Underwater Kinetics Sunlight UKD8 Dive Light
This is my main torch and has been with me since I started diving in the UK. This is a sturdy dive light with a pistol grip. The main body of the torch is made from tough, non-corroding ABS and polycarbonate plastic construction. The lens is surrounded by a thick...

Advantages: Always on your bike; no fiddling with batteries Disadvantages: Possible build quality problems; wheels can get in the way; slightly fiddly to set up
...Ree-Lights are marketed as a frictionless kinetic bike light. What this basically means is that the light unit mounts to the bottom of your forks, or at your rear dropouts, and is held close to the wheel by means of a metal bracket. Magnets are attached to the spokes which then pass by the light unit, which contains a little magnet coil, which causes the light to flash. Think of it as a modern take on the dynamo light.
There is a basic model, which stops flashing when you stop, but there are two other models which also house capacitors within the unit, and continue flashing for a few minutes after you stop, or even light continuously.
On first viewing I fell in love with these. I liked the idea and the simplicity, especially after getting caught out a couple of times without lights on the bike forcing me to walk home. These stay...

Advantages: convenient size, good brightness, extremely durable, water & shock resistant Disadvantages: more expensive than comparable inferior models
...Most people who know me well are aware of my obsession with torches and flasks. There’s probably some deep and meaningful psychological reason for this but what causes it I don’t know. The results are an incapability to walk past a display without browsing, which frequently ends up with me buying. There is no doubt that in the event of an electrical failure I cold illuminate my street and keep its residents supplied with hot drinks!
I have a lot of torches including little key ring ones, credit card style, forehead lamps to he more standard, traditional torch. I’ve got wind up, rechargeable, kineticallycharged and battery powered ones and from this choice I’ve selected the MagLite Solitaire Key Ring Flashlight. MagLite are one of my favourite brands as they are so well made, so nicely presented ad somehow so sexy- yeah I know...
