This was the first of Mick Farren's books I read and for me it stands out in terms of storyline, characters and locations. Certainly there are similarities, the main one being the theme of 'one man against the odds' which re-occurs as the moving force in several books.
So to it. The book is set in some indeterminate future, with the usual array of technological advances (gadgets,robots etc) mixed with post-apocalyptic decay. Phaid is a professional gambler, down on his luck, somehow found himself at the backend of nowhere playing what may be his last hand of cards. After an altercation with his fellow card-sharps there is a standoff, with Phaid holding a remote in his hand and his adversary aware of a prickling feeling on his neck.
