Horseware Rambo supreme heavyweight turnout rug
My horse is a sensitive soul, needing to be wrapped up warm in the winter and shielded from the flies in the summer. So he is rugged up for 90% of the time!
For all you non-horsy types a rug is a coat that covers the horse's body from his shoulder to his tail, fastening under his belly and round his chest. Some horses particularly the finer types racehorses for example have been bred over the years to have finer coats that no longer give them enough protection against the British weather. So both in the stable and out in the field they need to wear rugs to protect them.
Sadly I am not fortunate enough to be able to check on my horse throughout the day so when thinking about getting him a new cosy winter rug I needed to be sure that it would be safe for him to wear all day, no rubbing or bits to catch on fencing or gates, That is would be strong enough to cope with any playtime rough and tumbles. That it would keep him warm and dry with no leaks but also that he wouldn't get over heated on milder days.
As I already own several Horseware rugs I was already aware of their quality and great range of products. I searched my favourite horsy products websites and catalogues. My magpie eye spied the new Rambo supreme in the Derby house catalogue and I was immediately impressed. It covers the horse from his neck, just behind the ears right to his tail. The neck cover is removable for milder days; this is secured to the main body of the rug with a chunky spiral zip. This also has the added bonus of 'laying' the horse's mane. For all you non-horsy types the horse's mane should lay on the left hand side, if you look at the horse from the front. My horses mane tends to style itself in more of a Mohican so the neck cover has kept it under control throughout the winter!
The rug is coated with AquaTrans a coating that creates a tough waterproof and breathable fabric ensuring that the horse will stay dry but not over heat.
The Rambo Supreme has leg arches which mould to the horses shape allowing maximum movement and keeping drafts out. There are three surcingles ensuring maximum safety and fit to the individual horses shape. For all you non-horsy people a surcingle is the straps that go under the horses belly to keep the rug in place.
There are reflective strips on the front; rear and tail flap of the rug so that you can spot your horse easily on those dark winter evenings. The rug also has a lining which polishes your horses coat saving time on grooming. A free matching head collar was also on offer while stocks lasted.
With all these features I knew I had to have it, this is not to mention the fact that my horse would look dead smart in this black rug with its smart gold binding! When I saw the price I hesitated a little last year this rug was priced at £215.00, it has now gone down in price a little too about £205.00. As the rug has a three year guarantee I bought it!
My horse has been wearing his Rambo supreme all winter and has been most cosy and snug. Last winter he would wait around the field gate asking to come in to his stable, this winter he has spent more time out in the field and appears happier being out. The rug hasn't slipped, ripped or leaked and my horse had a beautiful shiny coat all winter. Although an expensive rug for me you can't put a price on piece of mind and I felt satisfied that he could be left on the coldest of days and would be warm, dry and happy.
I would recommend this rug to anyone with a fine thoroughbred type horse that feels the cold, although for those tougher horses there is a middle weight version with no extra filling in the neck. Although pricy you may find yourself spending the same amount over three years on inferior rugs that leak or break!

I'd forgotten how much things like rugs cost. How depressing, don't think I'll ever be able to afford another horse!

Sounds like a great rug, I am a rambo fan, and also a weather beeta man. Both great. Nice review. Well looked after horse!! Tom xXx
Advantages: Light, warm, dont slip, never rub, horses seem to like them and dont try to get them off. Excellent value for money. Disadvantages: Expensive to buy, although I believe they are extremely cost effective.
