This may not be the cheapest rug in the world but boy, is it effective!
Rambo rugs are part of the Weatherbeater company, a manufacturer with a fantastic reputation for quality.
Rambo is one of their sub lines and includes a diverse range from fly rugs to heavy weight turn outs.
Rambo turnouts come in a range of weights so that you can build up an enormous collection of rugs to suit any foible of the British weather! If you are smarter than me, you would probably stick to a lightweight, a heavyweight and then just layer as necessary!
I bought my example in the heavy weight in a 6' size to use on a Welsh Cob.
The material it is made of is really thick, with strong stitching and binding. It is also very robust and can withstand serious levels of rolling, mutual grooming and finding the one sharp bit on the fence to rub on.
Fittings are equally tough and large enough to make them easy to do up and undo, even if your horse fidgets about. or in the dark.
Rugs vary hugely in cut. The Rambo is generously cut so you do not have to buy a bigger than usual size. They are also cut quite deep so they are great for a broad or deep barreled horse or pony. In fact they are one of the few brands I have come across that seem to suit both horses and ponies.
Appearence is fairly irrelevant as any turnout rug will soon be covered in mud, but these look pretty smart and are available in a range of colours.
My horse was very comfortable in his Rambo. He wore it 24-7, all winter and never became rubbed, even with no bib underneath. He was able to move freely and was happy to gallop and roll about like an idiot in it.
When I sold the horse (a whole other story!), I sold the Rambo to a friend and she used it this winter on a clipped out cob. Again, there was no rubbing and the horse has been very comfy in it.
The Rambo seems pretty breathable and horses only sweated in it when we had really quick changes of weather.
I paid over £100 for the Rambo but 2 years later it looks as good as new. It has been washed a couple of times but has not needed any mending or re-proofing.
These are very good quality rugs which will with stand seemingly any conditions. I suspect that over a few years, they become pretty inexpensive as you shouldn't have to replace them as often as with many brands.
