Advantages Advantages clean, good key system, membership freeze

Disadvantages Disadvantages you have to put the effort in, it's not a magic cure

...but at least I'm reactivated... It has become increasingly obvious over the years that I am prone to vast spells of laziness. Coupled with a love of food this has led to there being more of the Melee in evidence than she (and people who have to sit next to her on the train) might like. And every so often this means she goes on a health kick and tries to fight back against the belly swell. This particular bout of leaf-eating gym-going has been a long time coming. In fact, I think it has been two years since I last did any proper exercise, and that was a two years filled with particularly ... more

Advantages Advantages Lots of machines to use, lots of classes and staff are nice.

Disadvantages Disadvantages You have to pay for towels!

My review is for the the Virgin Active in Kingston Upon Thames. I signed up to Virgin Active about 6 months ago and must say that I have been very pleased with it from day 1. Virgin Active is a gym that is aimed at young professionals. The main selling point of this is that there are no children allowed so if you want to go for a swim you don’t have to dodge any children playing in the water. For me, this was a major boost. I called up on day to arrange a look round and was seen that same day. I was taken round a tour of the facilities including the gym, pool area, changing rooms and where the ... more

Advantages Advantages activities, cleanliness, very large, great customer service

    Disadvantages Disadvantages price slightly high

i attended virgin active a few months back now and after being shown around i become a member. The facilities available in the gym are absolutely fantastic, these include swimming pool, weights, CV equipment, Yoga equipment, Sauna, Steam room, Tanning beds, and a variet of classes such as boxing, cycling, circuits and light weights yoga, so everything for everyone really!! The layout is very good i think, and the cleanliness and space of the changing facilities was to an incredible standard. There was also an indoor cafe with food and drink and internet acess available too. If you have kids ... more

1 Star Quick review of Virgin Active Fitness Club (London) by PUMP_ACTION 08/12/2007
I Agree with the other posters. Virgin Active have said that they are helping the enviroment. What a load of garbage, they still continue to print out lots of posters and leaflets to advertise that fact that they are helping the enviroment. What they have produced in paper must out weigh an potential enviroment saving. With regard to other cost savings they seem to be cutting back alot, I think its to do with the Flotation of the Virgin Active Group so the the new company has to spend money and Virgins bank acount stays very healthy hence depriving its membership. ... more

1 Star Quick review of Virgin Active Fitness Club (London) by NV_London 29/09/2007
I used to be a member of Holmes Place and in particular the Kensigton club which was a Premium Club (I also have the Privileged card which allows me access to all gyms). Since Virgin Active aquired Holmes Place, the quality of the gym facilities has dropped significantly. More precise, the floors are very dirty, the stuff is not helpful, I no longer get freebies and guest passes. In addition they recently started renovating the gym and although there was a sink at each cubicle in the female changing rooms, now there is only one. They continuously seem to worsen the ... more

Advantages Advantages if you want to make a lifetime commitment to a poor to average gym, great

Disadvantages Disadvantages i don't live within a hour of a virgin active &they're taking me to court!

Warning : be really careful about joining, it'd like Royston Vasey, impossible to leave. I cancelled my contract in writing in September before i moved out of the area. The next May I got a call from a collection company threatening me with court ! No correspondence from Virgin in that time, staff very unhelpful, and clearly bored with dealing with this problem. 3 months notice to exit actually refer to 3 specific months! And no guarantee that they won't just ignore you, as you have to cancel from the website, and have no record of your own! And if you are willing to debate the matter you ... more

Advantages Advantages Accessible by walking over Stockley Park or along the bypass. Also served by buses A10 and U5

Disadvantages Disadvantages sometimes machines are out of order. Very busy during from about 5pm week days

This is one of the big Gyms with a 25 metre pool and Spa with whirlpool, sauna, steam room and sanarium. It also boasts a Sports Hall and two studios as well as two floors with weight area and excersize machines. It also has a creche and a cafe, with Internet facilities and a lounge area I have been a member for a number of years now and get good benefit from my membership by going at least three times a week. There are a number of membership packages to join with so its best to find one that suits in respect of how much you want to use it. There are so many classes to choose from as well, all ... more

Advantages Advantages Loads: Much better than Fitness First!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Cafe area

Gym and changing rooms are very clean; in fact whilst I was there a cleaner was giving the showers a good scrub. GHDs to use at no price. Molton Brown toileties as well as lovely bath robes & towels that changing provide you with a bit of modesty unlike some other gyms whereby you get one tiny towell, not washed properly etc etc. Uptodate gym equipment to use although I'm sure they could put more weight machines in. The negitive is the coffee/food area - isn't very enticing & quite expensive. Also have seen quite a few comments on the padlocks - you don't have to buy them there, you can bring ... more

Advantages Advantages Clean and BIG, free internet

Disadvantages Disadvantages Classes book up very quick

Islington virgin active It's big, What a fab steam sauna area, I used this gym first thing in the mornings just to chill out. The staff seem a LOT better than other gyms in the area but you always get one dickhead who spoils it. It's also a little bit more in price but I think it's worth every penny. I was there was free drink like in fitness first but you can't have everything. You also have a swimming pool which is nice. I wish there was more, more amd more of these gyms. Good freezing system for your card. This wasn't my local gym as I had to get on the bus for 15 mins but it was worth it I ... more

    Advantages Advantages Central

Disadvantages Disadvantages No more sweat towels

Good Points: The Staff are friendly. Bad Points: Ever since Virgin Active took over Holmes Place it's been a really poor show. Virgin Active have been trying to reduce the towels they provide ever since they took over. They have now reduced the towels to one per person in most of the London clubs. General comments: They say this initiative is for the environment. They have refused to bring back the small "sweat towel" and they demand a pound for an extra towel that they say they will give to charity. When asked if they will be donating the savings made to an environmental charity they say no ... more
