My son isn’t the best when it comes to riding a bike and he is still learning all the time and so I do like to make sure that I get him out on his bike regularly as I think this is the only way he is going to really improve and lose those stabilisers for good! I think it is very important that a child wears a good safety helmet when riding a bike and the set which my son has is the riderz helmet and pad set which I bought from amazon.
The set came in a plain white box with no picture or anything so it wasn’t very glamorous but I suppose the packaging is irrelevant as long as the items inside are good quality. Inside the box you have the helmet, elbow pads and knee pads and so it is quite a comprehensive set to keep you child as protected as possible whilst they are on their bike. The helmet fits head sizes from 48-52cm and currently fits my son’s head perfectly and I would imagine it would do so for perhaps another year or so and then we would need to reinvest in a larger one.
There are instructions provided in the box on how to correctly fit the helmet and we did take the time to read these before putting it on my son’s head for the first time as I think the correct fit is as important as actually even wearing the helmet to begin with. The straps are adjustable on the helmet and so the straps fit around my son’s ear and under his chin nicely, not so tight that it would nip his skin when it is being fastened but tight enough to ensure the helmet stays in place on his head and doesn’t move about as he is riding. The helmet is very easy to put on and take off although my son does prefer that I do it for him currently as he doesn’t want his neck to be nipped by the clip.
The helmet itself is pleasant enough to look at as it is a shiny black hard plastic with a polystyrene inside. It is more of a full helmet rather than one which just sits on the top of the head which makes me feel more comfortable as my son is riding along, especially since we have altered the height of his stabilisers so he is much more wobbly at present! The helmet has the word riderz printed on it in white but it is a basic looking helmet as a whole. My son thinks that it makes him look cool though and as long as he is happy and safe I am a happy Mum!
The knee pads and elbow pads are made from a similar material to the helmet but obviously have stretchy material so that they can be placed on the child’s elbow or knee and fastened with Velcro. My son finds the knee pads quite restricting and so doesn’t like to wear them very often but I will be insisting he wears them when we take those stabilisers off his bike just to protect him initially.
I feel very happy that this set is a safe and well made one as it feels excellent quality and although it thankfully hasn’t had to deal with any traumas I feel confident that it would offer good protection for my son should he fall off his bike. The set currently sells for £12.70 on amazon which comes with free super saver delivery and is an amazing price in my opinion!
