An unwinnable case?

Advantages: excellent gripping read
Disadvantages: none

I am a great fan of courtroom dramas, which is one of the reasons why I enjoy John Grisham novels so much and I pretty much look on him as the master of this genre. Therefore, when I discover a book that claims that it's 'better than Grisham or your money back' I am bound to be interested. This was the claim made by the publishers of 'The Tenth Case' which meant that I found myself compelled to read it. I do think that Grisham at his best is pretty unbeatable although not all that he writes lives up to expectations. So could this book beat, or at least match, what Grisham does? Read on... At the start of the book, we meet Jaywalker, a defence lawyer, whose methods are somewhat unorthodox to say the least. In fact, he is in so much trouble that he is about to be barred from practicing law for three years. He is, however, permitted to ...

Review of The Tenth Case - Joseph Teller

Gliding down the sink...

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Taste, texture, price, ahhhhh - read the review!

I apologise. About 12 months ago I received a survey about a new product concept that the Baileys bods had come up with, based on what the makers stated about Baileys Glide I clicked 'would definitely buy' and 'fits the Baileys range perfectly'. I was wrong. What have Baileys done? While my favourite chocolate bar and perfume will change by the day, ask me any time what my favourite alcoholic beverage is and I'll say Baileys. Every time. But *this* isn't Baileys. Yes, it's made by Baileys but erm... no, it's not Baileys. It markets itself as a blend of Baileys Irish Cream and vanilla 'for a longer, lighter experience'. I'll tell you now, it's longer because it's so awful it'll take you an hour to get through a small bottle. In my wildest dreams I never thought I'd even use the word 'Baileys' and the word 'awful' in ...

Review of Baileys Glide

Besides the sea

Advantages: "We joined the navy to see the world?."
Disadvantages: "And what did we see? We saw the sea." (Irving Berlin)

for the sculpted shapes thus formed. Cliff hangers In England we tend to think of cliffs as sheer white chalk headlands of the kind to be found awaiting bluebirds at Dover ? or the Seven Sisters, or Beachy Head ? and very impressive they can be, from a distance. The trouble is that when they are so white and overbearing that they draw the eye up away from the sea, and away from its movement and its sound. In my view, chalk cliffs are most impressive when they break up and intermingle with the waves, as with the Needles at the pointed end of the Isle of Wight. In any case, cliffs don?t have to be large and chalky. Take a look at the basalt headland in Northumberland on which the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle stand, not hugely high, but hugely atmospheric. At first glance the dark cliffs that rise from the pounding ...
