Great value gear shifting from Shimano

Advantages: great performance and vale for money
Disadvantages: looks perhaps aren't to everyone's taste

My girlfriend has just bought her first mountain bike; a Kona Lana'i . I've been riding and racing for many years and have been very impressed by the shifting performance of her Alivio gear set up. I?ve been using Shimano XT gears for years but having now ridden this Alivio shifter for some time I?m really impressed with the crispness of shifting, ease of set up and maintenance. It perhaps doesn?t look quite so good or work quite as perfectly as Shimano?s higher priced offerings but at the end of the day this is a budget mechanism designed appropriately and priced and marketed in the same fashion. As a budget shifter this can?t be beaten in my opinion, set up properly it works as well as a shifter more than twice the price and is a great first budget buy before upgrading in the future to more expensive kit. I can?t comment on how ...

Review of Shimano Alivio

Alivio: Prefers flatland

Advantages: Popular, Widely Available, Value For Money
Disadvantages: Can be unreliable

The Shimano Alivio rear mech, popular and is appearing more often as the "default" mech for entry level bikes, up to bikes made for amateurs. Its not the best mech around, nor is it the worst, its somewhere in the middle. On flatland its usually very reliable, efficient, small downtime till the gear changes, and often is relatively quite. You can feel the change though. Ascending is a different story, where the Alivio lags. There is often a lot of downtime, an unreassuring crunch as it changes over, and sometimes if can shift up or down on its own accord. I wouldn't reccommend this to the dedicated or even semi dedicated XC rider, but is more suited to the commuting, or anything else, as long as your not thrashing it around up and down hills. ...

Shimano SPD M072 Cycle Shoe to infinity and beyond

Advantages: Strong, well made, functional
Disadvantages: Nothing yet.

SPD INTRO Shimano M072 shoes are SPD cycling shoes so here's a quick explanation of what SPD is. For those who may not know SPD stands for Shimano Pedaling Dynamic. All very nice I hear you say, so to explain they are Clipless pedals. Basically you get a pair of shoes, bolt on some clips to the shoes, get a pair of SPD pedals which are like a clamp, step on the pedals and your feet are locked to the pedals. Rotating your feet to the side then releases you from the pedal. (not as dangerous as it sounds). GENERAL Shimano mountain bike shoes have been around for a number of years now and in my opinion if you are a user of SPD pedals then you can't beat Shimano PSD shoes for reliability. I have used number if different types over the years, most of which I cant remember the name off and ones that usually found the bucket because they ...
