I’ve been using Shimano XT gears for years but having now ridden this Alivio shifter for some time I’m really impressed with the crispness of shifting, ease of set up and maintenance. It perhaps doesn’t look quite so good or work quite as perfectly as Shimano’s higher priced offerings but at the end of the day this is a budget mechanism designed appropriately and priced and marketed in the same fashion.
As a budget shifter ... ...it works as well as a shifter more than twice the price and is a great first budget buy before upgrading in the future to more expensive kit. I can’t comment on how long the mech has lasted yet but its been going quite a while now with no signs of deterioration as yet.
My girlfriend has just bought her first mountain bike; a Kona Lana'i . I've been riding and racing for many years and have been very impressed by the shifting performance of her Alivio gear set up.

As a budget shifter this can’t be beaten in my opinion, set up properly it works as well as a shifter more than twice the price and is a great first budget buy before upgrading in the future to more expensive kit. Advantages: Popular, Widely Available, Value For Money Disadvantages: Can be unreliable
The Shimano Alivio rear mech, popular and is appearing more often as the "default" mech for entry level bikes, up to bikes made for amateurs. Its not the best mech around, nor is it the worst, its somewhere in the middle. On flatland its usually very reliable, efficient, small downtime till the gear changes, and often is relatively quite. You can feel the change though.
Ascending is a different story, where the Alivio lags. There is often a lot ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "Shimano Alivio"
Advantages: Light, nice ride, good brakes Disadvantages: Chain should have shield, brakes bit squeeky, only availible from halfords
I brought this as my last bike, a saracen, died on me, it was really in a terrible mess! I brought this for £400 in Halfords, which is a pretty good deal for what you get. The technician was very helpful in there, otherwise I probably would have brought a bike from a Local Bike Store.
So, what do you get for your £400 here? Well, a light and strong bike, with hyrdaulics, 24 gears, thick tyres, nice wheels with strong spokes.
"GT Triple Triangle Aluminium frame with butted tubes
Suntour XCR 100mm travel fork with hydraulic rebound damping and on the fly lock-out
Tektro Auriga Comp hydraulic disc brakes 180/160mm rotors
Shimano Deore/ Alivio 24 speed gearing
Truvativ Isoflow chainset
Tioga Factory XC tyres
WTB SX24 rims
SDG Bel Air saddle
GT over size bar and stem"
All in all, a good bike for you money. So far, been so good ...
Advantages: Superb looking and repectable brand Disadvantages: slightly uncomfortable ride
adjustable pre load suspension fork. Shimano 24 speed Alivio gearset with Shimano EZ fire shifters and Shimano front and rear mechanical disc brakes. (which belief me is a major plus in the wet) ...
Advantages: handles perfectly this is a great bike, useful on a range of levels Disadvantages: no rear suspension so on rough tracks you have to stand to avoid jumping off saddle!
and advertise what a good bike you are riding!!! but how do you know if you have a good bike? by the components, these are the NuNu's compnents;
The NuNu comes equipped with butted 7005, 3.9lb. aluminum frame, Rock Shox Jett forks, ShimanoAlivio front derailleur, Shimano Deore rear derailleur, TruVativ crankset, ShimanoAlivio Rapid-Fire indexed shifters, and a Sun Race 11-30 8-speed freewheel/cassette. These are all decent quality, low cost components.
the only problem i have with this bike is that it comes with an AWFUL saddle as it is super Hard and really painful to sit on! so i purchased a new saddle for about £25 so its now alot better, however the bike is now to small for me, and i am moving on to buy a specialized enduro, this is not from bad experience that i am changing makes back to specialized but becasue the bikes that are ...
