Advantages: Everything. These reels are the dogs bits. Disadvantages: Maybe the fact that when the freespool is on you have to turn the reel handle a full 1/2 a turn to engage the clutch. Can be a bit daunting when you first start using the reel and your used to picking up the rod and striking before reeling in.

After over 25 years of fishing and in that time i have swapped many reels and am always looking for a better deal. Anything that comes on the market that makes fishing easier is always worth a look.
The shimano baitrunner is truely the bees knees when it comes to carp fishing, and at a very resonably price. i know the daiwa emblem's are good but for quality and price you can't beat the Shimano.
The first thing that strikes you about the reels is he quality. Just looking at one and you can see that it has been made with hard fighting fish in mind. Which ever one you decide on and there are a few. you will not be dissappointed. You get all the lingo with it like line lay, ball bearings, anti-reverse gearing, all is a bit much for an average angler.
So in my opion the ease in which these reels can be used is great. i first tried the reel on the river trent in full flow with a bit of extra water running through my swim. The baitrunner has a tensioner on it so when the river was running hard all i did was tighten it up a bit and the freespool was ok. A fish could still pull line off the reel with the minimum of effort.
Unfortunately i didn't get anything on that trip, so i headed down to my local pond armed with my prized reels. After only 20 minutes i was into a hard battling Common Carp. To say the reel stood up to the fish was an understatement. The reel did most of the work as i fight a fish using the drag and not back winding(Why pay all that money for a reel and not use it properly). The line lay was brilliant even under great pressure form an irate carp. The drag was good and the fish was soon beaten.
Maybe this is why the Shimano baitrunner reels keep there price so well. Fully recomended to anyone who wants to go big fish hunting.
Advantages: Best proven baitrunner on the market, rear drag switch... Disadvantages: Not that I am complaining off. Maybe a free spool would be nice.
Recently purchased ny second shimano baitrunner. Had a smaller one (3500 series), love it and not get a biggie (6500 series) for sea angling. This baitrunner had been around for so many years, yet the design has not evolve much. mainly due to it was already perfect as it is. Black, squarish, there are no phisical attraction, but functionality and the power that it hold make it all worth it and I can't think of any better model to replace this baitrunners. ... ...last forever too. I think Shimano is the first one who invent this rear drag switch thing and pattented the 'baitrunner' name too, I think. When I did sea fishing, my favorite method are live-baiting for mid/ top water species and bottom fishing for bottom/ near bottom dwellers. Live-baiting is self-explainatory, free-lining. There are two drag to set, baitrunner drag can switched-on for minimal drag and front drag pre-set for hook up. Having resistance ...

Advantages: Fantastic quality for a budget real!! Disadvantages: Not quite as well balanced as the GTE range.
This is an excellent reel by no mistake. I have had this reel for 3 years and fished many gravel pits around the UK using it. The RE reel shares many of the same features that the more expensive GTE range has including the Shimano's patented Aero Wrap system, Rotor Cast Control and Positive Bail. This is designed to prevent any problems whiles casting long distance. Using the 8000 versions loaded with 15lb line the casting ability is amazing! More than adequate for the UK size lakes.
The main difference between the RE range the GTE range is that the GTE has 3 more ball bearings. This means that the GTE by comparison is lot smoother and allows for better handling. Also the RE only has a single crank handle oppose to the double handle on the GTE. This means that the reel does not feel as well balance while reeling in how ever some ...
Advantages: Stylish, easy to use, well made and very durable Disadvantages: Quite expensive
I recently purchased 2 Shimano 8000 GTE-B baitrunners and wow how have I managed to fish before without them. I'm yet to find a fault with them. With the ability to adjust the baitrunner and drag with ease and my casting distances have increased dramatically enabling me to fishing in areas that were unreachable with my previous reels. Yes they cost £74.99 per reel but they last for years (My dad has had a pair for 12 years and they are still quality).
I'd definitely say that these are the best reels I've ever used and I've been fishing for 15 years so I've had my fair share of reels over the years. They also look good finished in silver with a strong line clip for when you need to recast to the same area, as many of you know a good line clip is essential.

The ShimanoBaitrunner 10 000 XTE is by far (in my opinion) the best multi-purpose specimen Carp reel on todays market. A piece of quality engineering this reel is built from a hybrid Aluminium body making it extremely tough and durable and features 7 ball bearings for a smooth running performance. I have had a set of these for a couple of years now and have fished small English lakes to large gravel pits in France and they have never let me down.
The 10 000 XTE holds around 420 yards of 12lb line so is fine for casting distance and boating a like. Another great plus I have found to my advantage is the Titanium power line roller making sure line twist is never a problem to me! Shimano also supply this reel complete with a spare spool (both aluminium, two in total) and the balanced double handle is ambidextrous ...
