Advantages: Your a pro if you wear these v. strong good mud clearance, breathable, (look good!) Disadvantages: Expensive - and you can't realy walk far in them.

Always buy a strong base when you buy any SPD shoe if the guy (or gal) tells you to buy a shoe that when you pick up is bendable ... ...season. Strong means good power transfer. If your just starting you maybe tempted to stick with a soft shoe after all that’s what you’ve been riding in for years anyway. Challenge your self you wont be disappointed the shoes will last longer and give your feet more protection.

Well simply if you don’t know if your “feet are in” the pedal, which is the case when there’s a lot of mud about, your not safe. These shoes allow strong reliable “clip in” the mud clearance from the underside is good; you normally get in if you need to. Mud clearance is more important for the shoe than the pedal after all how often does your pedal stand in mud.
Get your feet in a set never buy a set even if your replacing old ones of the same model, without trying them on. You can find your feet have changed shape. Always get a tight set this will mean taking you usual socks if you wear anything like the porelle drys don’t forget them.
Gripes about the shoe - you can’t really walk in these - a few years ago there was a shoe that you could walk into town in (you might get some strange looks). I don’t know the make number sorry, they stopped making them anyway cos I wanted some more instead of these. These shoes are made to cycle in so with all the advanced technology that went into making them you really shouldn’t be able to, to be honest.
The pugs (studs) what ever you want to call them must be greased in DO NOT MISS THIS OUT.. I had to drill mine out, costly and could have damaged the shoe. Grease the cleat the studs into position (loads of it too). Put the key for your stud and the spares in a very obvious place like taped on the inside of the box. Don’t let it get to winter and realize your buying new bits when the perfectly good ones are just hidden in the house somewhere.
Finally I have been told by many people that velcros no good on shoes (mostly roadies). There wrong velcros fine I’ve ridden cleats for 5 years 2 of them with Velcro only… it never jams up with mud. It doesn’t pick up bits and its very very strong with the width and amount you actually fasten to. This shoe has a click fasten anyway which is very strong, too strong some times when you get carried away pulling the tag in only to realize your foot when its on the pedal is in a totally different position.
Buy a set if your looking to upgrade old shoes (its well worth it ) The shoes are quite water tight but have breathing on the top so will let plenty in if you decide to push your feet into puddles that are ankle deep. For a beginner I’d say go for it if you know you’ll be ridding in 4 years time, but remember nobody is going to want a set of traded in size tens (when there 9 ½) if you decide to pack in cycling all together.
