Previously, I had a pair Of Ritchey WCS Ti spd pedals (i paid £60 on ebay, but the retail at £140!!). These were next to useless - the bearings failed within 12 months. They looked good and weighed not a lot, but didn't work very well, at all :O(
I begrudgingly purchased the XTR spd's for £56.99 from wiggle, as I didn't want to go the "shimano" route again. First impressions of quality were superb, especially for under £60!!! The smoothness of the bearings is silk like. fitting is just like any other pedal. Adjusting the tension springs was also the same as any other spd, although I didn't have to do them as tight as previoud spd's I'd owned. Clicking in and out of the pedal gave a satisfying quality click. In riding i've done so far, they perhaps clogged more than i'd have liked, but the riding was very very extreme.

You just can?t ‘handle it? and its an insult to the component. I speak from a point of never having ridden with XTR until earlier this year, when I happily was in the financial situation to get what I wanted, and boy I got it (but I won?t get rid of my ‘beast? MTRAX 400 of 5 years(she is a real lady)). People who upgrade one component expecting it to do the work of the ?set-up? just kid them selves this is one of the main draws of this specific piece an in-experienced cyclist will often plump for better speed transfer when what he needs is better braking so he can enter corners faster. Its like formula one - you can ?beat some one on the brakes?. Even worse it maybe a cyclist with too much money and just buy it so other cyclists can laff when they over take ...

OK, let's start by clearing up one thing here which I bet at least 90% of the people reading this review will be asking: What's a cassette?
Well, a cassette is one of those incredibly boring things on a bike that doesn't look posh, and which your average bike owner would probably never even think about buying. So, take a look at the back wheel of any geared mountain bike or road bike. See that set of between five and nine cogs? That's a sprocket cluster or cassette.
So, why would anyone buy such a thing? Simple. A bike in regular use gradually deteriorates, and the drivetrain (front and rear cogs and chain) is no exception. The chain stretches, and this causes the teeth on the cassette to wear down. This eventually leads to the chain jumping under load, and until I could manage to get the money together to buy a new ...
