Taking a camping trip to Alaska or the Upper Penensula of Michigan, or Antartica in January? Then this is the type of sleeping bag you'll need. Lets get real here though. Who honestly goes camping in JANUARY?? I'm a hardcore camping enthusiest , but even I take a break from Dec thru Feb. Only, even in April and May or September and October, it can get down below freezing at night. Not to mention how freezing the ground can get since it's a natural insulator of the cold.
Even WITH a tent, air mattress ,and your "normal" sleeping bag, you will stuggle with sleep. There will constantly be a part of your body that will stay chilled. I found out the hard way last year in Scotland how imperative it is to have a special tempature regulated sleeping bag. At the end of April 2008 I took a backpacking trip to Inverness (near Loch Ness....and no I didn't see the Monster). At the time, I had a +20 degree sleeping bag. Which, I thought was completely sustainable for me. It was April for crying out softly! Scotland gets chilly, but not below 20 in APRIL, does it?? Boy was I wrong.
I woke up in my backpacking tent with my toes, face, and fingers feeling like someone had soaked them in ice. I keep putting on more clothing, socks, gloves, but it didn't seem to help all that much. Plus the coolness of the ground still seeped into my back as well. It was a miserable night, and I had to walk 20 miles the next day! Suffice to say, it wasn't my favourite backpacking trip because I was so exhusted from lack of proper sleep. Fast forward to the Fall of 2008 when I purchased this Slumberjack +10 Degree Sleeping Bag. I was in the U.P of Michigan in late October. I thought to myself before going...."No WAY am I going to freeze again".
So, I did some online shopping and sporting goods store shopping and came across this sleeping bag. I didn't really want to spend the money on it. The most I had spent on a sleeping bag before was around $50.00. Yet, I was sooooooo happy I decide to spend the little extra money on this one. You will never go cold in this sleeping bag. It is off the charts comfortable. It's compact enough to fit on the bottom of your backpack inside your tent,(although it is a bit more bulky and heavy than some others).
If you want that extra warmth though, you will have to take that slighty bulky factor with a grain of salt. I wasn't upset that it took a little more effort to attach this to my pack. I was happy to do it, because the first night I used this, I didn't wake up once the entire night from being cold! It's very easy to get in and out of. I love the drawcords on it and the hood that you can wear (it doesn't feel oppressive or annoying, you barely know it's even there). I could sit here for a good hour telling you how much I love this sleeping bag, but i've probably already convinced you. =)
At the end of the day, if you ever get cold with a normal sleeping bag, take my advice, invest in this bag. You won't be disapointed!
