The First and The Best Book by Wilbur A smith

Advantages: Authentic details and a great read
Disadvantages: none at all..

the narrative moving at a fast pace right to the final pages. An exciting book to say the least..This was his first book, but one gets the feeling that he is a veteran novelist going by the details and the style of narrative. His writing style is distinct and very direct with no frills. I loved the descriptions about the slow building of Johannesburg . Sean has been portrayed as a very Daring and strong man who is able to take anything that comes his way, success and failure in his own stride. He is shown as a man with a totally carefree attitude who loves life, drinking, womanising and living life like there is no tomorrow. But unfortunately pays a heavy price for all of this. One is instantly attracted by the manner in which Smith has sketched Sean and his personality, seems so very real. In sketching such a towering personality like Sean ...

Review of When the Lion Feeds - Wilbur Smith

The River God by Wilbur Smith

Advantages: Very enjoyable, very Egyptian
Disadvantages: It's over 600 pages-not good for those who are not patient

I always find Egyptian culture and history facinating. Whenever there is an archelogical documentary on the television about Egypt, I would watch it. I was recommended this book by a colleague who found it very interesting. The story is set in ancient Egypt, the time of the great pharaohs. It evolves around three main characters: Taita- a eunuch with expertise in medicine and technology, kind of like the Michaelangelo or Da Vinci of his time Lostris- proteges of Taita, the daughter of noble Lord Intef, the most beautiful maiden of the time Tanus- a young army general, only son of a deceased noble Lord It was a time of turnmoil when Egypt was divided into the upper and lower kingdoms. The pharaoh was in great trouble from the outside and inside of the country and he longed for a male heir. The ambitious Lord Intef ...

Review of River God - Wilbur Smith

Another literary storm by Wilbur Smith

Advantages: A book that gives escapism a new meaning
Disadvantages: Not for "short book" readers (674 pages)

I've read almost all of Wilbur Smith's books now and after the exhausting task of finishing each one, I have to go and find the next (Anywhere dammit - bins, bookstores, charity shops - I don't care!!!!) Monsoon, set in the dawn of the eighteenth Century (another episode of the Courtney family - set about 25 years after “Birds of Prey” left off) is an enchanting tale of a family torn apart through each other’s differences. The East India Trading Company suffers catastrophic losses due to pirates on the high seas and after four years away from service, master mariner Sir Hal Courtney prepares for what will be his most dangerous voyage yet - a life or death mission in the name of Empire… His sons (William - Black Billy to the other brothers, the determined bully of the boys, Guy and Tom - twins a few years ...
