A Bic board is an obvious choice as you have probably seen a lot of them about. However, it really is a beginner's board- and that's it. If you are progressing from a mini-mal, this is definitely one of the best boards that you could buy. They are used by many top surfers including myself. I have a Zuma Jay 7 ‘’2’ long and 3’’ thick surf board. It is just so smooth and the Zuma Jay board design is well cool. I got it second hand in Braunton for just £110. I got it in surfed out which is a well good shop. For just £110 it might sound crap but the guy made a mistake a sold it to me for that much from £150 (which he got in quite a bit of trouble for). Disadvantages: Nose breaks off too easily & BIC customer relations are very poor.
