Imagine a lake on a hot summer's day. Imagine sitting back on a sun lounger by the side of the lake, relaxing and enjoying the peaceful sounds of the countryside waiting for the fish to bite. Your eyes are fixed on your float that is just beyond a bed of lily pads, you are distracted for a moment by a small frog popping up onto the lilies and when you look back your float is slowly disappearing under the water. Strike, you lift your rod sharply and feel the tell tale resistance of a fish on the other end. A battle of wits ensues as you fight to keep the fish out of the lilies and bring it to the shore. Success it's in the net. The wonder bait has done it again.

The wonder bait? Sweetcorn is the answer to that and the point of this piece of writing.

Sweetcorn has been used as a fishing bait for many, many years and has been used with considerable success by thousands of anglers in that time.

Sweetcorn.

We all know what sweetcorn is don't we. In fishing terms tinned sweetcorn is the most widely used because the sugared water in which it is immersed in the tin adds to the smell, flavour and general attractiveness to the fish. It is also of course a lot less hassle than breaking it off the cob.
In recent years fishing shops have started to stock sweetcorn of different colours and different added flavours in a bid to improve this already highly successful bait.

What kinds of fish like sweetcorn?

First and foremost sweetcorn is the classic Tench bait, they seem to love it and never tire of it. Carp too seem to be partial to the odd nibble as well as, Roach, Rudd and even Chubb along with Bream.

How to fish with sweetcorn.

Stick it on a hook and throw it in the water would be the easy answer I guess.
When hooking you must keep the sharp end of the hook clear or you may well miss bites.
All the different fishing methods will work with sweetcorn.
You can use it suspended in mid water under a float or on the bottom under a float. Even in flowing water this works to good effect.
Ledgering works well too. Ledgering is where a larger weight is either fixed onto the line or allowed to run freely up the line. Bite indication is made possible by use of either a swing or quiver tip on the end of your rod that is placed at a forty five-degree angle to where your bait is placed. This allows you to see when a fish has taken your bait by movements in the rod tip. Alternatively an electronic "buzzer" bite alarm could be used either on its own or in conjunction with a vertical indicator. This is where the line is pulled down taut under a weight and when the fish pulls on the line the weight rises.

Quick tip
A good tip for a cheap vertical alarm is a piece of garden doweling rod pushed into the ground and a washing up liquid bottle top used to weigh the line down.

Bait presentation can be enhanced by use of an open-ended swimfeeder attached to your line. This device allows a mixture of sweetcorn and groundbait to be delivered to the area around your hook bait making it more attractive to fish.
Modern alternatives to this include the use of PVA string or bags that do the same job but as they dissolve in water they do not have the same "clutter" properties around your hookbait as a swimfeeder does, giving a more natural presentation.
The only problem with using PVA with sweetcorn is that the bait is naturally moist so will start to break down the PVA before the cast is made if you delay to long.

Pro's to using sweetcorn as bait.

There are several pro's to sweetcorn. First and foremost it is a proven bait that has caught many, many fish in its time.
Secondly it is relatively cheap and easy to get from any grocery store, the fish are not going to worry if it is a store value pack so I would go for the cheapest.
Thirdly it is versatile and can be fished in a variety of different ways as described above.
And its natural colour and smell make it attractive to fish in its own right so there is no need to add smell enhancers or flavourings although it will take these should you choose to add them.

Cons to using sweetcorn as bait.

Yes there are one or two downsides to fishing with sweetcorn.
Firstly as it is a relatively soft bait it is fragile and won't stand up to long casting very well. If you are not careful you could see your hook flying through the air and your bait landing somewhere completely different.
Secondly fish are not the only creatures to like sweetcorn, if you keep the bait box open you may well find some unwanted yellow and black striped guests buzzing around in your box the next time you put your hand in it.
You should not take sweetcorn tins or any other tins for that matter to fisheries; some have strict bans on them because of the potential for litter and danger to wildlife

My angling experiences using sweetcorn.

Where do I start? I have caught many fish over the years using sweetcorn, using different methods and bait presentations, In still and flowing water.
I have caught Tench up to four pounds, Carp well into double figures as well as decent Rudd and Roach.
I suppose the highlight would have to have been the day sweetcorn netted me seven Carp, all in excess of ten pounds from a privately owned lake that I had been given the chance to fish

Overall.

I have used sweetcorn as a bait for many years and now although there are so many commercially available baits I still think sweetcorn has its place in any anglers tackle box.
Although I do use a variety of other baits I always have a box of sweetcorn with me. Even if I am going to use another bait that day I always have the sweetcorn to fall back on if the other baits are not working.

I remember we went to a local trout fish farm with the children and were given sweetcorn to fish with. It was amazing the trout were leaping to get it! The worse part was hitting them on the head, I can gut quite happily though! Jo x

I'd never have known there was so much to say about sweetcorn in this context!
