The secret to this driver is the Taylor Made Launch Control system which is effectively 4 little screw-in weights (2 x 10 grammes and 2 x 5 grammes) that reside in the back of the club. Based on the way the 4 weights are distributed around the back of the club will determine the shape of your shot. The beast comes with a custom wrench to unscrew the weights and a handy 'wheel' that shows you the best positions for the weights based on your swing and ability.
I have always been the kind of gut that takes a 3 Wood off the tee as my driving was always a little wayward to say the least. My game had evolved and my ability increased to the point that I needed a little extra off the tee. Last year I had the opportunity to buy the R7 and since I picked it up my driving has improved considerably. Now we all see the adverts that this driver or that driver will ensure you hit the fairway every time and we all know in our hearts that this is not necessarily the case, however with the R7 the percentage of fairways I hit is significantly higher than with my old trusty 3 Wood and I am also at least 50 - 70 yards further down the fairway.
Dont get me wrong - I have launched the odd one or two into the woods but I can honestly say that I have not used such an easy and forgiving club as this. Off centre hits still eat up the fairway and the shot height and shape on good hits is a thrill to see.
The club looks stunning sat behind the ball and the massive head instills tremendous confidence particularly on that tricky par 4 with water on the right and OOB on the left.
The price can be a turn off for many but you are getting a huge amount of technology and confidence. Mine cost around £400 a couple of years ago so they should be a bit cheaper now.
I would recommend this club to intermediate Golfers or better, as they will get the most benefit from it. I think beginners will simply get tagged with the 'all the gear and no idea' label if they turn up with one of these and launches one into the woods.
As with all Golf Clubs, try before you buy, but you wont go far wrong with one of these babies in your bag.
