Advantages: Covers whole horse, except legs. Disadvantages: The very top of neck can get a bit wet when grazing.
...My horses are not in rugs yet and they are still out at night. I hope to keep them out until the end of October or just before. They may need thin rugs a bit before then, I have noticed that some horses have rugs on already in the rain. Mine will be clipped towards the end of October and will need stable rugs for the stable and for in the field I always use rugs with neck covers (unless too hot) and the Shires StormBreaker Combo is a great turnout rug with integral neck cover.

Winter can be a messy time with horses especially if raining. When the horses come in from the field to go in the stable at night, they need their feet picked out and washed if muddy, their rugs changed, you may like to give them a brush then and check them over before putting on the stable rug. I always like to save time...

...O BOY, THIS XTR REAR MECH IS THE DADDY,HE'S SMOOOOTH,STABLE,SHORT&TIGHT,ITS FAST AND RESPONSIVE.VERY HIGHLEY RECOMENDED.
NOW FOR THE CONS, AS MOST XRT, PARTS ITS VERY EXPENSIVE
BUT YOU KNOW WHAT THAY SAY YOU PAY FOR TOP QUALITY.I HAVE USED THE XTR SHORT CAGE REAR MECH ON A RIDE AND IT PERFORMED VERY WELL THE GEAR SHIFT WAS VERY SWIFT WITHOUT ANY GRAUNCHING OR CLICKING. I WOULD ONLY USE THE LONG CAGE FOR CROSS COUNTRY AS IT TENDS TO HAMPER MY STYLE OF RIDEING. WHEN IN COMBO, WITH THE XTR 9 SPEED SHIFTERS AND FRONT MECH THIS KIT WILL BE A CERTIAN WINNER. THIS IS THE BEST SET UP IVE USED AN A VERY WOURTHWILE UP GRAED TO ANY RIDEING STYLE....

Advantages: Warm, waterproof, easy to use. Disadvantages: None to me.
...The British weather has a lot to answer to. One minute it is like the middle of summer and the ground is rock hard and we really need rain. The next minute, it is like the middle of winter again. The rain has come and events have been cancelled for being too wet! I did put my rugs away, but they are out again now, partly due to the fact that after work on Thursday, my horse out without a rug, was too wet to ride. I haven`t gone back to the rug that I am reviewing though as it really is a winter rug, but my thoroghbred has a medium one on. I have so many rugs I don`t know what to do with them (almost, I have more than one horse though), but the Weatherbeeta Arion Combo is a good one.
Firstly, why use a rug?
