This gun is good for newbies who want play occasionally at walkons (where you take your stuff to a site and meet other people to play a game) or scenarios (big games which have a story line). There is not much time involved in maintaining it, you could leave it for 6 months and it would shoot fine, there is oiling needed but i know someone who has not bothered for 4 months playing nearly every 2 weeks and its still fine however you should still keep the rear bolt which you pull lubricated since it is exsposed to the atmosphere.
This gun is uber durable i have never had any breakages on it. You could throw it against a tree and it wont break or run over it with a car and only get scratches (i wouldnt advise it though). The one thing i have loved about owning it (i used to have one but not anymore) was many have one so if you get a problem with it everyone can help you (thats like never though!!! i never had any problems). Another good advantage is having a feedneck which goes to the side allowing you to aim at your target with the sight. There are many upgrades such as body kits, shoulder stocks, barrels, triggers etc these can improve performance and some just for looks!
This guns has very minor cons which dont bother most people. It can be too loud for some peoples liking which is a disadvantage if you want to sneak and shoot like a sniper. It does not fire that fast. Also you wont get as many shots out of a c02 (carbon dioxide) or air (mostly made up of nitrogen) tank as a top of the range gun. I have not liked the trigger on this gun since it is too slow for a tournament player so i no longer have this gun, i have bought a mid range and a top end gun. But i can say this was the best gun i could have started off with!
This gun runs fine on both air and c02 but i recommend using air since it wont freeze up the interior (c02 is stored as a liquid in the tank so it is very very cold!!!).
The gun is well balanced and is a must for a begginer or a spare marker (paintball term for gun). This should meet your requirements and expectations unless you decide to start doing tournaments (speed ball fields which are open fields with blow up bunkers). This is a must!!!!!!! The prices range from £95 to £120 Tippman have made one fine marker! take a look at the next one up: tippman A5
On the one hand if you are Sunday paintball player it is quite nice gun for playing in woods or even one field, it is very reliable, mostly it wont chop paintballs, if you wont fire too fast. Another advantage for this gun is chance to improve it or customize it, you can add a lot of parts to make this gun just best for you.
For the first time i tried Tippmann 98 in playing Rookie league in Latvia, it was quiet OK as i was playing Front men, but ... ...to hit tha target.
With all thease advantages it is bets gun for rental, because it will work great with newbies, but to own this gun probably you should buy another barrel. Weight of gun is OK ang hoding is OK too, if its not same to you you will be able to customize it as you want.
You must know it will be harder to clean Tippmann 98 than the any Spyder clone, but Spyder you must clean after every day of playing, but Tippmann probably 2 times ...

This product is amazing i own a X7 and it is so reliable and accurate, i have never had it break down on me and we play bush ball all the time rain or shine, I've used this gun more times than i can count and haven't had so much as an o ring break.
Pros- gun looks great, feels nice to hold, very accurate, many upgradeable parts, superior internal design, Great Operating Air Terminal (G.O.A.T.).
Cons- Expensive, co2 efficiency.
the pros for this gun easily out weight the cons and this gun is just great i cant express how much I love it. it is amazing.

Advantages: Tippmanns are durable, and customizable. Disadvantages: Some of the upgrades are expencive.
I have owned a Tippmann 98 Custom for 5 years now and never had to replace a single thing on it. It is very durable and is great for the rugged users. It is one of the most customizable guns available. Tippmanns last the longest out of any gun I have seen. Tippmanns have a bottomless pit to upgrades. You will never be bored once you have one of these laying around. Some of the things that I would recommend is an E-Trigger, which increases the rate ... ...per second. Another is a longer barrel. Although it is your choice of what you do with your Tippmann this is the one paintball marker that I would definitely love to see in action. Tippmanns are made of solid cast aluminum and are guaranteed to last. A line-up of some of the Tippmann markers is the 98 Custom, A-5, Carbine, Pro-Carbine, and the X-7. All with amazing durability, and customization ability. ...
