Mention the Pro V1 to the average golfer and one of the first words they'd use would be 'expensive'. Mention the Pro V1 to a decent golfer and one of the first words they'd use would be, 'long'. Mention the Pro V1 to a good golfer and the word they'd use would be 'essential'.
There is no doubt in my mind that the Pro V1 has taken shots off my game. I am no expert on the production of golf balls, but as a low handicap golfer I believe I am able to review this as well as most.
Titleist describes its characteristics as: Longer Tee to Green. Straight consistant Ball flight. Drop and Stop Technology. Soft High speed Performance feel. Shear and Abrasion Resistant Cover.
With none of this can I argue, but for someone who wants to know how this will affect there game, what does it mean? Longer Tee to Green - I found that I was hitting my irons much further. This meant I could pick a shorter, easier to control club than I would have done before. And thus I hit more greens. Straight consistant Ball flight - Many balls tend to wobble in the air. The Pro V1 keeps a constant path which means if your shot is straight, it stays straight. It also seems to cut through the wind better than other balls. You get much better value for your good shots. Stop and Drop Technology - This is one of the most satisfying features of the Pro V1. It is always frustrating when you hit a green but the ball runs through. Changing to the Pro V1 meant this happened far less often. The ball had a better flight so came from higher, and when it landed there was far more spin on the ball keeping it on the green. Plus a ball that stops dead is a very satisfying site. Soft High speed performance feel - This means that the ball has the same feel when playing hard or gentle shots. This is very useful as you get used to how the ball will react. Consistency is key to a good short game. Shear and abrasion resistant cover - This will not really aid your game. The cover is very strong and tough which simply means you won't need to change it as it gets scuffed and worn. The ball will last longer.
Competition - The main competitors to the Pro V1 are: Nike ONE- This is Nike's versioin of the Pro V1, advertised and used by Tiger it is bound to get recognition, but on the tour you can see the Pro's preffer the Titeist. Srixon - Many player have found the Srixon to be a very good ball, it is slightly cheaper than the Pro V1 and not too dissimilar in it's play. If the Titleist weren't available I'd probably use this. Other competitors of merit are the Callaway Hex (the new Black version of this is supposed to be very special). The Wilson True is another ball aiming at lower handicap golfers, i found this ball to be very good on around the green but a little weak off the tee and the fairway.
Summary - The Pro V1 has got a hefty price tag (over £3 per ball), but in my view it is worth every penny. It is straight, long, soft and has a great roll off the putter face. The Pro V1 is miles ahead of any ball on the market.
I suggest to any golfer looking to improve to invest in the Pro V1.

Cool stuff. I use Nike One at the moment and they're pretty decent, but they have a tendency to swing waaaaay over to the right and over the railway lines on the second hole... or maybe that's just my swing.... hmmmm....
as for stop and drop... you have to be able to hit the greens first! he he
