I'm not really into the science of golf balls, all I know is that there are good balls and not so good balls. I wouldn't play with golf balls that cost 20p per ball such as Donnay because they don't feel nice to hit and yes on the golf course you just don't use Donnay to play low rounds and in tourneys.
I tried a titleist Pro V1X today in a Stableford tourney off white tees so I had a little extra yardage to play, I mostly use Titleist PTS Solo because they are designed for mid to high handicappers, and I can hit them, so they work for me. Titleist have brought out this new breed of ball, and as i said I don't know the science so i'm not going to say there is this and there is that, etc. All i know is that these balls are designed to cut out spin, have a lower flight and create more distance, however, I never saw any of that. To me the new titleist ball felt like a Pro V1, and i try not to use those either because they are too soft for me and don't travel like the Solo PTS. I felt the Pro V1 X wasn't the ball for a high handicapper who is happy busting 90 gross each week, I would imagine the ball is really for a low to scratch handicapper who knows all the fundimental rules of hitting a ball, and getting it into the dustbin lid zone on the green. I think the price of a dozen reflects that also, at around £30 a dozen can a high handicapper afford to waste such a gracefull dotted ball in the trees, in someones garden and on the main road, i don't think so.
off the tee i found this ball shorter than my usual golf ball, I'm not sure about the control as i tend to hit straight off the tee anyway, I found no back spin and no sudden stops the ball wasn't effective for me.
On the plus side I had my ball 16 holes until I went badly out of bounds into the trees, and there it will lie until some dog or a lucky golfer finds it. Before the 16th It was in top condition so I guess a good few rounds of golf in them.
If you are a low handicapper I would certainly recommend them for those special tournys but if you are a mid to high and don't usually see a back spin or a sudden stop on the green directly under the flag stick go with your usual ball or simply try a Solo PTS, but don't waste your £30 on 12 of these balls.
Titleist are amongst the front runners in golf equipment but I tend to think they concentrate on the low handicappers or pros rather than the average club player, which basically most of us are.
