Trangia stoves

A stove that I liked to use for camping during the summer months is the Trangia, this is not just a stove, it is complete pack, cooker, frying pan and saucepans. These all pack away into one convenient light pack. The fuel it uses is Methylated spirits (I must admit that when I first heard ... Read review

I use this for my summertime chews

Advantages: Light and not much space taken up
Disadvantages: Not the best in extreme conditions

...The Company

Trangia is a Swedish company and was founded in 1925 by John E. Jonsson together with his father in-law. So they have over 80 years experience in manufacturing their stoves. In that time very little has changed in the way the Trangia stoves have been made. Probably the biggest change would be the non stick coating that is now available.

What is the model that I use?

I prefer the Trangia 25, ...
...is the heart of the Trangia it is probably worth explaining exactly what it looks like. Imagine a small brass tin with a screw top lid, on the outer side at the top are a series of small holes that go all the way round (this is where the gas type flame will come from once it is burning properly)
This is all held neatly together in one package with a strap.
The overall weight of this is only 1.1 kg.

Why do I use it?

Throw out that old gas stove!

Advantages: Lightweight, easy to use, fuel and time efficent
Disadvantages: hard to clean

The Trangia is a well established portable cooking device brand - Don't accept any Rip-offs.! The Trangia is an all-round good buy - every minute detail maximises the efficiency of the cooking: Beginning with the heart; the methylated spirit burner. The brass "cup" will hold approximately 150 ml of meths allowing you to cook for a good half hour without having to refill - Don't try and refill it when you've already lit it whatever you do! - Take ...
...cooking for four. The Trangia stove comes in a range of sizes and materials: If you want a small compact stove for just one person then the Mini-Trangia is the one for you. You can pick them for less than £20 and they are as durable and as efficient as the rest of the Trangia range. They include everything basic that's needed for 1 person to cook for themselves. However if you're looking for a cooker for 2 then the "27 series" stove is the one you ...

Trangia - the stuff of legends

Advantages: Lightweight, compact, tough, ready for anything
Disadvantages: None - really.

...I have owned my Trangia since 1983 (!) and except for replacing a lost pan handle and a lost saucepan it is still performing to the same standards. Trangia now come in many formats - large and small, standard pans, teflon coated none stick frying pans, dual layered pans for increased thermal conductivity and are now available to be used with gas rater than the traditional methylated spirits. I have used several different version but the most important ...
...transportability. The Trangia is stable and gives out excellent heat for a long time (up to an 3/4hour, dependant on setting, on one fill of meths). The packing system of pans, burner, windshield, kettle and frying pan means it is extremely compact (I often leave it in the boot of the car for roadside tea brewing). This is a necessity when carrying all your kit on an exhibition. This is not so if you are camping from the boot of your car and I use ...

Trangia, indestructable stove

Advantages: Light, unbreakable
Disadvantages: Slower to boil, lack of fine flame control

I have had my Trangia since 1989 after several years of experience using them and it is as good as the day I bought it. They are robust, and will last a lifetime. Unlike most liquid or gas stoves, the burner has no moving parts. Just fill with Methelated Spirits, (some water, to reduce sooting) and light with a match. The heat of the flame causes the fuel vapour to rise up the side channels of the burner and out through the small holes at the top. ...
...one inverted with air holes holds the burner, the second - the windshield holds the pan / frying pan. Once the burner is cool, you can seal it up with a cap. The O-rings are still good, and it has never leaked on me. On top of the lid you can store the flame control. This is a guard that sits over the burner and restricts the flame. There is a sliding disk, which can progressively shut down or extinguish the flame. Also in the kit you will get two ...

Easy and quick haute cuisine!

Advantages: compact design
Disadvantages: non

Whilst on a short trip to Ben Nevis 2 years ago, I brought one and haven't looked back since! it was the best snow conditions for 25 years, and not once did it not light, or blow out or let me down in any way! They do come in various sizes and options, but i just had the one designed for 1 person and it was all i ever needed! you really can take it out the box and use it straight away! no instructons needed, just a little practise to put it all ...
...cooked lamb cutlets with boiled potatoes, green beans and gravy all on this little pan, the odd steak too! not to mention the wonderful Scottish breakfast, with all the trimmings! The only thing they could improve on would be to design a suitable one for toasting bread! Otherwise, a culinary delight! I made every one I saw jealous as they were all struggling with big petrol burners, whereas mine all fitted in its little orange bag! In all, a triumphant ...

A bit to large and cumbersome!

Advantages: big pans, lots of pans
Disadvantages: heavy, large, doesn't cook that fast, makes pans very dirty

I've used a trangia on many weekends away in previous years, however i found that they are not really the best way of cooking a meal in the wilderness. Trangias do come in various sizes, which is a good point, but all models come with the standard pan holder come wind shield, 2 one litre saucepans, which easily fit inside each other, a frying pan, which also doubles as a lid and finally a handle for taking hot pans of the stoves. I must not forget ...
...conclusion i think that the trangia pans are useful for larger groups as the pans can easily hold a litre and the frying pan is approximately 18cm in diameter, great for cooking large amounts of food. On the other hand although trangia do have a 'mini' range, for the lone hiker it is rather cumbersome. ...

Coleman stove - fast food on the move

Advantages: Fast, cheap to run, fuel widely available - globally
Disadvantages: haven't found any yet - except not really lightweight

I have used a range of different camping stoves over the years, having been involved in outdoor activities with young people I have had an ongoing debate around the safety/efficiency issues. I have personally used a coleman stove for 15 yrs - the special delight is when you are camping with Trangia fans. I like to set-up the stove and kettle, in the time it takes to boil I can get my tent pitched and then go round with mugs of tea whilst my friends kettles are just getting up to a simmer - smug doesn't even enter into it. So why else am I convinced? You can control the stove from a gentle simmer to a full rolling boil, the fuel - unleaded petrol - is widely available, a tank full is plenty to cook a meal for two, with extra brews as well. The stove has a fairly wide base an is stable in most conditions, it is easy to light and soon ...

Review of Coleman Peak 1 Petrol Camping Stove

The best for storing camping fuels

Advantages: Robust and light
Disadvantages: Availability and the screw lid can become stiff

needs to be pressurised and go through a preheater but then acts very much like gas, Methylated spirits has a flame that is difficult to see, but once working cooks quite quickly. The only downside to these tends to be carrying the fuel, the containers that fuels normally come in are really not much use when it comes to putting things into a rucksack My Choice. Apart from the Solid Fuel cookers generally the Liquid Fuel cookers offer the best when it comes to term with weight and space saving (for instance the Trangia range of Methylated stoves come complete with pots and a frying pan which all store one inside the other and take up very little space), add to this the versatility that they offer and it is of no surprise that I have used Liquid fuel cookers of various types. The only downside (especially when using a rucksack, leaks ...
