Trek 4300

Advantages: Lightweight, Durable, Value for Money
Disadvantages: No lock out on the forks, no disc brakes, poor quality chainset

.../> After coming across the Trek 4300 my mind was quickly made up, lovely lightweight frame that wouldn't be out of place on bikes twice the price. A reasonable set of Shimano Alvio shifters and forks with adjustable pre-load.

Perfect for what I wanted, something I could commute to work on but also give a good thrashing around the local MTB routes.

The bike is versatile, the adjustable pre-load works well and although ...
...as you're not throwing it off 6 foot drop offs.

The only things really letting this bike down are the Suntour SR cranks. Mine were poorly fitted and the pedals had been cross threaded which meant that when I went to fit some SPD pedals it stripped the threads rendering the cranks useless. Que an upgade to a Shimano Deore chainset and the bike is now even better than it was.

One thing to note is that if you're planning ... more

Good solid Newbie Bike

Advantages: Quality frame and finishing kit
Disadvantages: BB and crankset could be better

...purchased a Brand new model trek 4300 for £299. It has the ASL frame from higher up the range, Bontrager finishing Kit, Cane Creek head set and Alivio Mechs. New style Bontrager Connection Tyres and good sturdy Matrix 750 rims and Grind 323 forks (same internal make up as judy tt and lighter into the bargain). Only downside is square taper BB and suntour cranks, but hey, what do you expect for 300 quid? I use this bike everyday, and as i weigh in ...
...the cranks and they are still standing. This bike puts up with a lot from me as i ride some very rocky trails and it is still all in order ( 200 miles and 10 days) not long I know but hard riding. Just look at it this way, the frame is 300 quid on its own, if you brake a mech or BB or crank, just upgrade. for an extra £150 pounds you can have a very tuff piece of kit, but only upgrade if it brakes. P.S very comfy bike for short legs with long Bodies ...

IDEAL FOR LIGHT RECREATION, ROAD USE

Advantages: Good price, Good looking frame, Smooth disc brakes
Disadvantages: Front Suspension Fork is very poor, esp for off road use

TREK 4300 DISC I bought this bike around 4 months ago, in this period it has done 700 miles without so much as breaking down on me, that being said I only use for commuting to work, even though the cycle is classed as a mountain bike, if used off road it would be in need of repair within a couple of hours heavy use the 4300 is a really good bike for someone who is just getting back into cycling/exercising and does,nt want to buy a \"road bike\", I got my 4300 for £400 off the internet with free delivery, there are so many websites out there, so spend a few hours shopping around, you ll def get the deal your looking for, also in the winter months most bike shops online sell last years bike at knockdown prices, prob best time is jan, feb when only the select few are still bombing about ...

M532 Chainset + external Bottom Bracket

Advantages: built in external BB, good quality
Disadvantages: None

I bought this to replace the SR Suntour cranks and stock Shimano Bottom Bracket on my Trek 4300. A fantastic upgrade, extremely sturdy, nice stiff cranks, excellent machine work. And to top it off, no internal Bottom Bracket is needed. Something I dont think a lot of the adverts for the item make enough of. You don't need to bother measuring your spindle as you just need to remove the entire bottom bracket and fit the M532 with the inbuilt external BB. You will need additional tools to fit this, but they can be picked up relatively cheaply and you never need to worry about wearing out any bearings in the bottom bracket again. It took me 15 minutes to fit, simply remove your old cranks, remove the BB and slot this in place. It comes with various spacers to adjust the width depending on your frame size and once fitted it ...

Review of Shimano M532 Deore 2 Piece Design Chainset, 9-Speed - 44/32/22T

TREK 4500 review

Advantages: Relativly light,great frame,strong wheels
Disadvantages: Judy TT front fork is a joke.

I recently recieved this bike as a direct replacement for my trusty Trek 4300,which,due to upgrading to disks, proved too much of a temptation, and was stolen just before Christmas. My 4500 has subsequently recieved little use,but I can say that the front fork is almost immpossible to depress, unless your a desperate dan lookalike. It is a likely candidate for upgrade ASAP. Otherwise, however the components are well put together and the frame is light and very strong.Thank goodness they have seen sense and incorporated universal disk mounts on the rear. I have already ordered disks to effect a brake upgrade, although strictly speeaking, the Avid single digit V brakes are more than adequate The Deore shifters are very light, and make gear changes a pleasure.I'll also need to change the tyres as they are for off road stuff, and at present ...
