Advantages: Cheap, extremely durable, abuse tolerant Disadvantages: Poor crank choice, may not be suitble for extreme use
..., and now the latest big thing are external bottombrackets. X-type from Race Face, Hollowtech II from Shimano, and GXP from Truvativ. While they have different names they are all interchangeable, as they are all made to similar specifications and similar dimensions.
Each "improvement" has led to stiffer and lighter BB's, with a marked decrease in durability. The latest BB's can last as little as 3 months on a mountain bike, if ridden in wet and muddy conditions. ISIS are particularly bad in this regard, but the new external BB's are in a class all of their own. Mounting the BB outside of the frame, makes them extremely vulnerable to water penetration and early failure.
The UN54 will give you an average service life of around 18 months to 2 years, and this reason alone may be enough to persuade you to stick with square taper. My last one a UN...

Advantages: Very light and durable, easy gear changing and very fast Disadvantages: toe caps can be difficult for beginners
...Although not top of the range its a very good bike. The weight can be felt on reasonably steep inclines but not so much as to hinder even a professional cyclist.
For club cycling this stands out. It looks good and performs great. I haven't ha\zd a single problem from mine and performs much better than my Apollo TDF.02

Advantages: Everything, build, price, quality, aftercare, look of bike Disadvantages: none
...gear Truvativ Isoflow chain set with powerspline bottombracket allow smooth momentum to be gained from fractional effort.
This said for a 27-speed bike it is amazing how high and low the gears actually are; you would not off road in the highest gear as you reach what seems like supersonic speeds.
The wheels DDm1 disc specific rims with Tioga Factory Extreme tyres give you a classy look with strength and grip.
Granted you can purchase more bubbly tyres for offloading but this is a happy medium for road and off road, this bike if you so desired cry's out for tuning.
It would be easy being made at the same factory as Kona Bikes you can see the class of this bikes beginnings, You can do pretty much whatever with this bike given the price and the spec.
Although I'm not convinced you would need to as this bike is aesthetically pleasing...
