Berghaus CyclopsII Vulcan

Advantages: Massive capacity, good support, versitile
Disadvantages: Lack of hydration bladder

The Berghaus Cyclops Vulcan is one of the largest rucksacks that you can buy, storing up to 100 litres and weighing 3kg, it is thus not suitable for a day hike. However, if you are reading this review, it is likely you are looking for a beasty rucksack, if so, then it's your lucky day. Designed for long-endurance and a lack of re-supply, the Vulcan is capable of holding everything needed for months without resupply. Those seeking a daysack should stop reading now, because the bag is impractical if half-full! It also allows for extensive modification, though serious modding would void the warranty. The Vulcan uses Berghaus' tried and tested Cyclops II back support system. While lacking Berghaus' 'bio flex' back system (allowing greatly flexibility), the Vulcan's support is decent, offering good back and shoulder support. This ...

We RX8ed

Advantages: Style, performance, handling, price
Disadvantages: Fuel consumption

of Subaru. The long bonnet is emphasized by the muscular-looking wheel arches with the cabin space blending perfectly with the lines and leading back to the boot with it's lip-spoiler. The rear light clusters are compact and tidy; there's nothing that spoils the lines. No new-fangled styling gimmicks, gratuitous angles or pointless curves just to be different - everything seems to be done for a reason and it looks stunning. Curiously, there seems to be something of a styling theme to the RX- 8- triangles abound. There's one sculpted into the bonnet, there's an aluminium triangle on the front spoiler, the rear foglight is triangular, there are triangles carved through the head rests and there's even a triangle shaped motif on the key! Then it strikes me - the RX-8 uses the latest incarnation of Mazda's legendary rotary engine technology ...

Mazda RX8: the driver's advocate

Advantages: Affordable, impeccable handling, styling, standard features, power, fun factor, driveability, usability (a true everyday sports car)
Disadvantages: gas mileage, lack of low end torque, Mazda service

9500 rpm limit. The torque could be more fantastic and to really get it going it takes a bit of revving, but with an engine this orgastically smooth revving is 50% of the fun. Not to mention the fact that the RX8 weighs in at a feathery 1309kg which means even with its diminutive torque, it's acceleration is swift with 0-62 mph coming up in approximately 6.0s. That other 50% of enjoyment lies in the perfect handling. With a weight distribution of 50/50, a stern chassis and incredibly communicative, light yet powerful steering this machine begs to be thrown into the corners. It glides through the bends as you shift down, accelerate through the apex of the corner and hurdle onto a straight where you fly on towards a top speed of 150mph. The sticky y-rated potenza tires help to keep the car on the road and even if all that grip gives out ...
