...Last summer, I decided that I needed to get fitter – I wasn’t overweight (quite the opposite in fact) – but I knew that I wasn’t as fit as I could be. I tried working out for a couple of months, but it just didn’t suit me. I wanted something I could do at home, so that I had the flexibility to do it at whatever time of night or day suited me, and so that I didn’t have the effort of travelling to a gym or sports centre. I toyed with the idea of an exercise bicycle, and whilst researching available models, I stumbled across something I had never considered before.
Whilst in search of the ideal exercise equipment, I browsed through the listings of rowing machines, and spotted something called a Water Rower. It sounds kind of obvious on paper, but I had personally never heard of this particular type...

Advantages: Great machine for developing fitness and losing weight Disadvantages: Repetition of movement, boredom
...The Concept 2 is the best rowing machine available and can be found in nearly every gym around the world. It is used by people looking for some light exercise and rowers around the world to train for their sport, even at the highest Olympic level.
Benefits of the Concept 2 rowing machine
Rowing strengthens upper and lower body with a smooth powerful motion. The movement is impact free and uses nearly all muscle groups, hence teaches co-ordination and elevates the heart rate more easily than other activities. Training on the Concept 2 rowing machine is great to lose weight (see examples at bottom), gain fitness and build muscle. The machines last forever and do not break unless they are treated really badly, you are more likely to break than the machine. The low impact form of exercise enable recovery from injury and self...

Advantages: Great equipment, good range of classes Disadvantages: Expensive, impersonal, membership administration
...I joined Esporta because I wanted a gym that would let me use its clubs all over the country, as I was doing a lot of travelling at the time. So Esportas Freeway membership seemed like a good idea. They have clubs all over the country which you can use at no extra cost and they're in nearly every big city. Gloucester was my 'home' club.
The gym is spacious and the equipment is all top-of-the-range. They seem to have just about everything, steppers, runners, x-country, rowers, cyclers and all the weights machines too. There's also cardio theatre so you can workout whilst watching the tv and listening on headphones. They have about 6 different channels such as MTV, Sky One, Sky News, Sky Sports, ITV, BBC1. Very good if you like to watch Eastenders and get a workout. You can also get a programme set up for you by the staff that means when...
