I have wanted a wind up torch for a while now but had never got round to buying one. Unfortunately my car was vandalised by a spiteful crook on Tuesday evening/Wednesday morning and in order to protect it from the elements my boyfriend suggested we put a temporary layer of paint on it. The problem was I was at work all day and my boyfriend would not be able to do anything until I had finished. As it gets dark earlier now I needed to get a torch.
I found my wind up torch in Wilko for £3.00. I thought this was reasonable as a cheap small torch would have cost that much when you buy batteries for it. It is made by a company called Uni-Com Limited which produces innovative products for your home such as lighting - indoors and outdoors, door chimes, smoke alarms and security alarms for the home.
The torch itself is from their Eco Friendly Power range and is a small squarish device with scooped edges which makes it easier to grasp (the torch I am reviewing is different to the one in the photo) and can easily fit into your bag or pocket. I am not sure how much it weighs but it is so light you wouldn’t know you were carrying it until you had a proper look. The torch itself is black and has three LED lights on the top and two small slides on one side and one large slide on the other side. The top slide switches the torch on and off and you get a bright wide beam from the three LED lights. The bottom slide releases the handle which is the large slide, which you have to use in a pumping action to recharge the batteries in order to use the torch. You have to make sure the torch is switched off before recharging the batteries. There is a tiny bit of resistance but you can still manage to pump using just one hand. The batteries are rechargeable and come included with the torch so there is no need to buy any batteries.
The instruction manual says one minute spent charging up the batteries will give you five minutes of torchlight. I spent probably 20 seconds charging the batteries and we had more than five minutes of torchlight. The LED lights are bright and lit up a decent area which enabled my boyfriend to carefully paint over the exposed areas and the beam does go a pretty long way – over 10 metres.
I was very impressed with this torch and the great thing is that there is no need to buy batteries. This is easy to hold and is so easy to operate and I am sure it will come in use again.
