If you are looking for a mid range tent with ample room and that doesn't blow away in a slight wind then this is a great tent.
Shape. The Vango 300 (there is also a 200 & 400) is decribed as a Geodesic design , basically it looks like two dome tents that have been merged together, so is quite an odd looking shape. But this means that internally there is a lot of space and has 2 entrances with porches on either side. This is excellent for changing your exit/entrance when windy or in driving rain.
Size. 240x 285 cm 150 cm high Sleeps 3 (comfortably) Weight 9.2 kg (a little on the heavy side, not a backpackers tent!)
Pitching Relatively easy if you have a pitched a dome tent before. It has 5 collapsable poles that are colour coded. The Inner tent is put up first. The only problem is with lining up the outer tent with the inner and tying it to the poles. Because of the unusual shape of the tent it is easy to put it on wrong (but after a few times you soon get the hang of it) . The guy ropes are adequate and sensible located on the tent and the pegs (stainless steel) are good quality, they do not bend easily like many do. Can be pitched in under 20 mins once you know what you're doing. The only problem here is with pushing the poles through pole sleeves, they're very tight, you need to be careful not to snag or rip them.
Inside The inner tent has an incorporated ground sheet, therefore reduces the chance of creepy crawlies getting in and is white, with mesh zip inner doors. There is also a removable curtain/partition for extra privacy if you are sleeping with others.
Outside Two tone blue, so doesn't attarct every insect under the sun! It also has two large porches and two air vents with work very well and prevent the tent from becoming overly stuffy..essential for summer camping.
Rain The waterproofing works perfectly and the great design of the tent means that it does not sag under the weight of rain, it all runs off, even off the porches providing the tent is pitched correctly.
Wind Excellent, this tent just does not move!!! But would not trust it in a force ten mind!
Packing up Horrendous if wet...but so is any tent! generally no different than any tent, the bag is never big enough. But the bag is good quality , decent zip and reducer/tension straps. The bag length is approx 1 metre. I would advise buying a second bag though so that you can keep the inner and outer tent separate, this way the inner tent will stay much cleaner, especially if you find yourself packing up a wet tent.
Price Under £100, we bought ours for £90! in 2003...I still consider this good value for the quality you get , however, if you are looking for a festival tent only, then you may get something quite adequate for much less, but for the holiday campers then I would certainly advise buying this tent.
