I have been skiing since I was 3 years old am now am 21. I have been on the world circuit most of my life and have been in the German national ski team and won German national titles at a young age.
A team member and I both bought a previous model of Volkl carvers (orange ones) and although they are and excellent ski we both had problems with the bases. During training in New Zealand on a rocky face there was a small land slide with pebbles scattered across the slope. After skiing through this trying to aviod as much as we could we later found that our bases had huge chunks taken out of them by the pebbles. They were huge gored out grooves and we were not impressed!. Later that season I crashed in a downhill event and snapped one of my skis.
So the only problem was that they broke on me and that the bases were similar in strength to solid wax.
