For me, the first thing that struck me when choosing a new set of irons approximately 12 months ago was the sheer variety available to choose from in terms of price, quality and value for money. One of the first factors that affected my decision was obviously price and when I had chosen an affordable price range I set about finding the best clubs to suit my game (I am a 15 handicap golfer). Talking to my local pro he reccomended that I chose a half-way house between the most forgiving, cavity backed, clubs and the better players irons (blades) which would significantly reduce the number of the clubs on the market to confuse me!

The first brand that I came across was the Nike Slingshot Irons but at the time these were slightly above my price range at over £500 (I was looking to spend £300-£400). Next I was taken by some Wilson clubs and I must admit I find many of their clubs fantastic to look at and the Pi5 are no exception! In the Wilson Staff series there are various degrees of golf club in terms of the standard of player the clubs are aimed at. This begins with the new Di7 model (Distance irons with a larger sole to reduce the effects of off-centre hits) which is the most forgiving. Next is another new model, the Ci6 which is aimed at mid-handicappers; feeling more like a precision players club but incorperating some of the more essential "forgiving" features. The third in the series is the Pi5 itself which is advertised as a "Performance Iron" to give players a variety of shot choices. The clubs progress from cavity backed long irons for forgivness to a bladed pitching wedge to give a strong player the right levels of precision and forgivness for their game. The final set of irons in the series is the Fi5s which are "Forged Irons" and are aimed at "advanced shot makers" and are blade clubs all the way through the set. Personally I believe the entire Wilson Staff range to be beautiful golf clubs.

I believe that a statement of just how good these irons are is the fact that tour players Padraig Harrington and Jesper Parnevik choose to play them over the more advanced clubs in the range!

In terms of technical detail the Pi5 is very strong too. As previously mentioned the sole width alters the harder the club is to hit. Also the heads feature thinner top lines than bottom so as you can see attention to detail is remarkable! Further to these features the clubs have perimeter weighting to allow as good a result as possible from off-centre hits and also, due to the fact the clubs are Wilson Staff, you have a staggering range of fantastic shafts to choose from when you buy. Available shafts include True Temper Dynamic Gold and Royal Precision Rifle Flighted in steel and UST Proforce and Graphite Design GAT in graphite. Fitting is a must to establish which is suitable for your game as I was amazed at what a difference a change of shaft actually makes.

To conclude, I have found these clubs to be a pleasure to work with and have no doubt that they have contributed massively to the improvement in my game in the last 12 months. They have lasted very well under a lot of use and I would recommend anyone looking into buying new irons at least gives them a test as they are now available at a very competitive price (£199 from Online Golf compared to the RRP of £499).
