Solid performer but outdated now
Review of ASRock K8Upgrade-NF3 - mainboard - ATX - nForce3 250 by
Pleiadestemplej
Advantages: Cheap, upgradeable, AGP, DDR
Disadvantages: AGP, 2 Dimm sockets, Upgrade card hard to find & uses DDR2
...Good board if you have an Athlon64 Socket 754 CPU to spare. It can then be upgraded to either Socket 939 or AM2 (though you'll need to get DDR2). However, the economics of purchasing the upgrade card are problematic as a cheap AM2 motherboard (from Asrock themselves) is almost the same price and more readily available...
Downsides: only 2 DDR Dimm slots ( though funnily enough there are 4 on the Upgrade card) and of course it's AGP only. The onboard sound is nothing to get excited about either (long gone are the days of Nvidia Soundstorm, unfortunately).
But if you have a fast Socket 754 CPU like an Athlon64 3700+ and an AGP card then it makes an effective PC.
I'm using such a configuration myself with Vista 64-bit and it's stable and fast with only 1GB of DDR....

GEIL
Review of GeIL DDR 2 Series DRAM 1 GB PC2-4300 by
Jon_Farrimond
Advantages: Cheap for what it is
Disadvantages: not backwards compatable with DDRI
...GEIL stands for Golden Empire Industries Limited. They use Samsung RAM that they repackage and test for you. There are only three companies in the whole world that make RAM and lots that repackage it. GEIL is one of them.
You can get this type of RAM in 533Mhz form all the way up to 1000MHz form, and it seems excellent.
I'm currently using two of these 1Gb sets and have found that they are both responsive and cool. They do not overheat like some RAMs and came well packaged and well presented.
The Specifications :
CAS 3-3-3-8
64x8 DDR2 FBGA Chips
240pin, Non-ECC, Un-buffered DDR2 SDRAM DIMM
Aluminum Heat-spreader
6 Layers Ultra Low Noises Shielded PCB
Overview
The specifications show a good fast module and its good that the devices comes with noise shielding. However it must be said that this is the lowest speed of DDR2...

Go fast for less!
Review of Kingston ValueRAM DRAM 2 GB PC2-4200 by
MadMike542
Advantages: Extremely cheap and very fast
Disadvantages: DDR2, not compatible with all motherboards.
...I recently bought 2GB of kingston valueram as an upgrade for my gaming PC since I require as much speed etc as possible to get the best out of my machine. I looked around for cheap DDR2 RAM and came across this little gem whilst surfing the net and couldn't resist purchasing it.
The upgrade from my previous 1GB of DDR2 was astonishing. My computer now processes things much quicker than before and still has a lot of spare memory left over even when large applications such as Adobe Photoshop or games are open meaning my entire computer runs faster. With being a website designer in my spare time I use dreamweaver and photoshop a lot, and with my previous setup I struggled to make good use of the programs due to slow saving times and such alike which got quite frustrating. With the introduction of 2gb of this RAM they now run like a dream...

Good value for money
Review of Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180 / 2 GHz processor by
zero2007
Advantages: Cheap, silent, easy to overclock
Disadvantages: Heatsink can be a bit fiddlly to install
...With the right motherboard this cpu can be overclocked to 3 GHZ with no problem.
Even on a cheap motherboard (abit ip95)i have overclocked to 2.2GHz just by raising the fsb by 10%
The processor is excellent for anyone building a cheap HTPC teamed up with 1GB DDR/DDR2 ram and a cheap pci graphics card this will run windows vista ultimate with ease.
The dual core enables you to run multi applications without any slow down of the pc.
It is nearly silent with the supplied fan and heatsink and even overclocked it run cooler than my previous cpu (pentuim 4 2.8)
I have benchmarked this processor against a E4300 and can see no difference in performance in everyday use.
Installation couldn't be easier altought the clips on the the heatsink can be a bit fiddly....

MSI PM9M-V P4M900
Review of MSI PM9M-V - motherboard - micro ATX - P4M900 by
wh666-666
Advantages: Stability and price
Disadvantages: Possibly limited PCI slot and memory DIMM's
...Hopefully this review may help others seeking an impartial opinion. To start off, il just outlay some brief specifications with opinions provided. Further specifications are available off the msi website.
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&maincatno=1&p rodno=1219
CPU
Socket 775 for Intel P4 3xx/ 5xx/ 6xx/ Pentium D, Celeron D, Core 2 Duo processors. Also supports EIST and HT processors.
Really handy as it supports my current p4 prescott HT and allows upgrade potential. It might seem like an obvious point, but finding a reliable board that I could use indefinitely on a p4 HT and then a dual core in the future was challenging.
MEMORY
DIMM1 supports 2GB max DDR2 400/533/667 and DIMM2 supports 1GB max DDR 266/333/400.
From the image, you may have already guessed this is a micro ATX board, so you don't really...

Mmmmm..... DDR RAM
Review of Corsair Value Select DRAM 512 MB PC3200 by
andersonfamily
Advantages: Gives me an extra 512MB
Disadvantages: No manual.
...MHz (more commonly know as PC2100). This is a PC3200 stick. Different motherboards take different RAM.
The way I found out the type of RAM my PC took was simple, I looked at the invoice. On it, it stated '2x512MB DDR400 RAM'. This means I had 2 sticks of 512MB over one stick of 1GB. 2x512MB costs less than 1x1GB.
Many computers only allow 2 sticks of RAM to be in at once, so I would recommend you open up you machine and look if you have any RAM slots free, look at the pictures to see what they look like.
RAM itself is very small, and is less tall than an A5 sheet of paper, and about an inch wide. It is easy to install, you simply pull a little catch, slot it in, and push the catch. Then you boot your machine.
The RAM itself is quite fast, hardly any RAM is faster than 400 MHz, and this is 400 MHz. It hasn't greatly increased...

256 MB Crysis crucher
Review of Sapphire RADEON HD 2600PRO by
tartupets
Advantages: alot of features and power
Disadvantages: lack of analog output
...ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro is the perfect graphics adapter for the budget gamer. This card is in my system consisting of Gigabyte M52L-S3 with the AMD Athlon 64 3500+ and with 2 GB of DDR2 singelchannel RAM.
In this setting, I have the standard 256 mb shared to 512 mb, with the top of 1 GB.
This card is very fast. In my processor review, the fps shown for these games are done with this card.
Only drawback is the lack of analog output. There are two HDMI outputs and a s-video, so you can hook up 2 HD TV sets.
I tested it with two 32" HD screens and the card played a 2K film without any lag and distortion.
Currently, I have a 19" widescreen LCD on it and it runs anything smooth and undistorted.
My only problem is with 128 bit memory interface. As I use solid edge and other editing programs, this is not as smooth and fast as expected...

RAM This Into Your PC!
Review of Kingston ValueRAM DRAM 2 GB PC2-4200 by
hackersupr
Advantages: Excellent value, 2GB, matched memory
Disadvantages: Not for overclockers.
...The Kingston 2GB DDR2 RAM is a great way to purchase all the RAM you will currently need for games and Microsoft's latest operating system Windows Vista.
Installing extra memory into your PC is the best way of increasing performance for very little money, if you are currently running 1GB and are on Windows XP you may want to stick unless you play demanding games. If you have Windows Vista you and only have 1GB or less of memory you will definitely want to upgrade as Vista is a demanding operating system and easily consumes 1GB of RAM with just a few basic programs running. If you have an AMD Athlon X2 or Intel Core2 Duo processor you will want to take advantage of your powerful hardware by matching it up with atleast 2GB of RAM.
In the box you will get two 1GB sticks of matched DDR2 memory, matched means that they are capable...

Faster than you can say Knife.
Review of Corsair XMS DRAM 1 GB PC3200 by
Stingwray
Advantages: Lowest Latencies Possible, Great Overclocking Flexability
Disadvantages: None
...this at under 40ns (nano seconds).
Because of this speed it makes the RAM very fast even when running at stock speeds (400MHz) which should be in sync with you front-side bus (FSB) which controls the speed of your processor. This makes for excellent data transfer between the two components.
If you are into overclocking then you relax the latencies to 2.5-3-3-7 and then with stock voltage you can reach 500MHz with overclocking the CPU, this can add even more performance even with the high latency.
This is a dual channel set which means that you have two sticks of memory of 512MB each making the 1024MB. 1GB of RAM is more than enough for a pc at the moment and still will be with Vista coming out next year sometime.
As for installing it is the same as any other stick of RAM which will occupy 1 DIMM slot on your motherboard and clip in.
Other than...
